Hi everyone:

I was just searching through the tools page and am as always amazed at the
resources out there!

I am quite intriguied by the picture of Jennifer's classroom promise. I am
hoping Jennifer could email me offline if possible about how she worked through
this with her kids.

[MOSAIC] Looking for song books titles

2007-05-18 Thread Kerry McDonald
Hi there:

I am thinking ahead to next year when this very Junior Intermediate teacher
will be changing to grade 1 /2. I have been watching and rereading Debbie
Miller and would like to purchase some books that there is a song version of
it (like Little Rabbit Foo Foo) I am not sure how to search for these types
of books, so I thought I would ask for your reccomendation. With iTunes,
finding the songs are much less of a challenge.

thanks in advance,

Kerry

Re: [MOSAIC] Reading skills vs strategies- HELP!

2007-03-23 Thread Kerry McDonald
Maybe skills vs. strategies was the wrong title. I am trying to teach some
nonteachers about the different "skills" we teach in the various components
of balanced literacy. Maybe that would have been a better questions, what
are the skills we need to teach kids to become strong readers? Is that
easier to answer?

My thoughts exactly that's why I shy away from this separation between
strategies and skills in reading. It seems to me that every skill is
connected to a strategy. Strategies are so much more profound and
encompassing that the skill is superflous. Does this make sense? What do
y'all think?

[MOSAIC] Reading skills vs strategies- HELP!

2007-03-21 Thread Kerry McDonald
Hi there:

I am looking for a list of Reading strategies and reading skills. I am
thinking the strategies are the big 7 (making connections, asking questions
etc.) and skills could include fluency, decoding, marking the text etc.
Does anyone have a "completed" list like this? I know this could open up a
bit of a debate and the difference between a skill and a strategy but I
would appreciate the help and support.

thanks,

Kerry

[MOSAIC] Book study with RWM and STW

2007-02-04 Thread Kerry McDonald
Happy Sunday Morning Everyone!

One of the schools that I am a Literacy Coach at is starting a book study on
Stratgies That Work (Junior/Intermediate) and Reading with Meaning
(Primary). It is a very small school and I would like to do these book
study meetings together, I am hoping that someone out there in cyberland has
done something like this. What I am looking for is some discussion
questions that I could use with both books at the same time.

I would also apprecaite if anyone has any discussion questions for both
books individually.

thanks,

Kerry McDonald

So did you use Words Their Way or one of Kathy Ganske's programs?? I am

[MOSAIC] Persuasive Pieces

2006-10-23 Thread Kerry McDonald
I know in the last little bit, there has been a lot of talk about text to
support writing persuasive pieces. Did anyone happen to jot down all of
those titles and save it somewhere handy?

If you did, would you mind sending the list to me.

thanks,

[MOSAIC] Debbie Diller vs. Workshops

2006-10-22 Thread Kerry McDonald
I just finished reading Debbie Diller this weekend and I am wondering how
you make the work stations work in a workshop setting. I am thinking that
during reading workshop while I was meeting with a guided reading group,
kids can read independently and or (I am not sure which word is right) go to
reading workstations, and then during Writer's Workshop, the same thing, but
with Writing work stations??

Can anyone explain how they make it work? I am a Literacy Coach grades K-8-
so any grade input would be appreciated!

thanks,

Kerry
