Re: [MOSAIC] assessment
I know. Grades are not ideal. However, I am one that is in a position to not only give grades within the confines of my room but also to report to admin., teachers, parents, and students about grades earned on common assessments the whole grade level uses. I like Daniels' ideas for some of the less formal, interim assessments I do in my indiv. classroom though. Thanks for reminding me. Kerry In a message dated 5/8/2007 6:32:38 A.M. Eastern Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Having just attended a weekend seminar with Harvey Daniels, his advice regarding assessment is ringing in my ears. First, says he, teachers need to let go of the sense that everything a student does must be graded but, realizing that we have grade books and need to leave a few tracks, he called for binary grading. As he described this, it is an all or nothing sytem--19 pots if you do it, 0 if you don't. He was speaking of lit circles, but AI see room for carryover. He also talked about having kids determine what is really important--a list of expectations generated BY the kids--along with a point value system (ALSO--OF BY THE KIDS). These points add up to 100 and there you go--a grade. I am trying to see this with relationship to strategies ??Thinking through my fingers about making connections?? Marks text with thinking using sticky notes where needed. Makes several meaningful connections. Can take connections back to the text. Is able to articulate connections to others. I work with students identified as having reading difficulties and we work on the use of strategies in class. I use the strategy interview in the "Mosaic of Thought" book. This has given me valuable feedback about the students use of strategies, and has been very helpful in planning lessons. I agree! This task is not cut and dry to say the least. When you use Keene's interview, do you have to give grades based on it? If so, how do you do that? I feel like we've been asked to put a square peg in a round hole! I know Keene has small book on assessing comprehension out now (can't remember the title), so one of our ideas is to incorporate her work in a written/oral assessment. I work in a middle school where each of us teaches multiple classes so giving an oral assessment to each student is close to impossible. I was thinking perhaps most can take this assessment we come up with in a written form and we administer an oral version to those students whose reading ability wouldn't be accurately assessed through their writing. Hmm...or does everyone fall into this category? Students need to learn and practice the strategies using a text on their instructional level. Therefore, since all your students have varying reading levels, differentiation is needed. Re: [MOSAIC] monitoring
Hi - After spending the first couple weeks of school establishing routines and doing independent reading lessons like those of Fountas and Pinnell's, I am ready to begin my explicit instruction of the Monitoring and Using Fix-Up Strategies strategy. Gina, I really like your click and clunk terminology! I am finding Tovani's book to be a good resource for teaching this. I think that first we must brainstorm together as a class how one knows that his/her comprehension is breaking down. Then I must model, perhaps with a book that is truly difficult for me, how I know I am having trouble and what I do to fix it. Again, a list of fix-up strategies can be brainstormed. Then what? Would anyone else be willing to share how they teach this strategy? I am looking for new ideas. In a message dated 9/15/2006 3:24:47 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Also..I have grades that simply must be given. Every 3 weeks a progress report goes out. I am in middle school, so credit for applying the strategies just won't fly. Can we actually grade strategy use? And if not there goes some of my strategy time while I find other products to do and assess. Your thoughts? Hi Gina - I have been wrestling with the same problem for the past 5 years. How can we measure the students' strategy use, and the how can we magically turn these assessments into a number/letter grade? In the past I created rubrics that assess the strategy use. The points earned on the rubric were then totaled to equal a grade equivalent...not exactly how rubrics were intended to be used but you do what you have to. I have lost the electronic files of these at this point but data was gathered from conferences, discussions, and written responses to make judgments on how proficient the students were at each strategy. It is something but I dare say there must be a better way. One answer may be given with the push for standards-based report cards. Here in Massachusetts they are becoming increasingly popular, even in the middle schools. My middle school is going to be creating a first draft using the state standards this year. Some of the 7 strategies are listed in our state standards so we can use data collected through conferences, written responses, etc. to gauge whether a student is proficient. No letter or number grades needed. I guess I could ramble about this forever but don't have the time or the answers. I'd love to hear how other people grade their students on strategy use!
