Hello all,

Read Across America is right around the corner...next week to be exact!! I was
just wondering what some of your districts were doing in honor of Dr. Seuss'
birthday. My district is always looking for new ideas. Any ideas would be
greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

I am working with a curriculum initiative this summer. Our middle level
readers will be doing one novel study per year (themed with CHOICES for
readers). Our classrooms often contained severely delayed readers and if
you could suggest reading at or below the 4th grade level related to these
themes, it would be much appreciated.

Hi Amy,

I was talking about Ellin Keene's new book called To Understand which just
came
out. It is a book that I will have to read a couple of times, but boy she
makes good points (as she always does). I would love to do a book study with
her as a guide.

Morning Girl is a fifth grade-ish chapter book with each chapter told by a
different character--mostly a brother and sister from an island prior to
exposure to explorers from Europe. The last chapter is an excerpt from
Columbus's journal upon meeting the island tribal members.

The True Story of the Three Little Pigs is told from the Wolf's point of
view--picture book--probably grade three reading.

The View from Saturday is a story retold from different perspectives--fifth
grade-ish chapter book.
