Thank you Ali! Just close your door and do what you know is absolutely best
practice for our countries children! Administrators who have no background in
teaching do what they are told, because they are told. Many do not know what

all very frightening.  Reading Workshop and RTI are district initiatives and
much money has been spent on them, but.. they RTI disappeared this
year. I'm guessing Reading Workshop will go next year! Maybe we should write
the next novel about the future with non-readers because of all this nonsense!

Re: [MOSAIC] Chapter 1 (Book Whisperer)

2010-07-09 Thread kinderei2

Wouldn't it be great if we could post some of the assessments we use with
kiddos during independent reading? I have a fantastic anedotal assessment I
could share. My student teacher focused on Independent reading of self
-selected literature in my third grade class this past semester.

Our whole district is adopting the same textbook to teach reading this fall.
This is appauling and scary. I manage our school bookroom which there is never
any money for. How can the district justify and waste so much money on these
texts? How can we as experienced professionals argue this gracefully? This
cannot be considered best practice. But, the powers that be say this is the
way it is and the administrators follow along.

One concern I have always had and have pushed for is classroom libraries. How
can we get our children engaged in reading when there is no money for quality
literature. Sure, we can write grants and spend our own money on books but
wouldn't it be lovely if our districts supported class libraries? Any ideas out
there?

I so agree with you. In my last district, we just about had a balanced literacy
in place with a large place for independent reading. We were in the process of
trying to get students to read challenging, rather than easy, text for
independent reading. I had written lessons for the strategies for grades 3
through 5. Then, along came a new superintendent with his own personal
curriculum director.

Out went our balanced literacy and in came the basal. Teachers were told they
had to use the basal exclusively and not use anything else! No time for lit
circles! No time for independent reading! How sad!

In my experience, independent reading is questioned because parents and
administrators don't think teachers are teaching. Unfortunately, the National
Panel could not recommend independent reading as an effective practice because
there is no scientific research to support. (Don't get me started on that.)

When a colleague and I wanted to use Nancie Atwell's reading workshop approach
in junior high in the early 1990's, our ass't superintendent told us no. He
thought others in our building would jump on the bandwagon, and then how would
we provide all the books! Luckily, we convinced our principal, and she told us
to go ahead. Of course, no one else wanted to follow us because it is a lot
more work than using a basal or other canned programs. Our kids read more that
year than others. Our scores kept even with the other teachers'. If we had
mapped out skills, I think they would have improved more. We were kind of
following Nancie. With all the other support now with Keene and Strategies that
Work, we would have even more effective.

I love independent reading! I just wish we could somehow measure how much
students enjoy reading with this approach. Those students who are most at risk
for turning off to reading, are the ones who need this the most but who most
often don't get time for independent reading.

Suzanne, Laura and list,

I can’t fathom the reason people question independent reading. Reading
must be practiced and absorbed. I tell my students reading is just like
practicing anything else. . . piano, basketball, soccer, painting etc. It
seems in education we must always prove why something is working ---
really??? BUT to say independent reading is not beneficial is just crazy!
How else can students read if they don’t read?? I agree with Laura we must
work to find the right book for the each student.

Rhonda

 Suzanne,

You bring up an important point. The reason many of us fall into the trap
of making activities to go with the book is to have something to show the
kids got it. We also want a product to put in a portfolio to
demonstrate to administrators that the children did indeed do the work.
There isn't a trust in the fact that given the opportunity to do so, kids
will read. I know that several teachers I have worked with have said the
kids are not really reading during independent reading. I feel it is
because they are not engaged, or invested in the text they are reading.
We as teachers have to trust that if we get the right books into kids
hands they will be engaged and reading. It is a great leap of faith.

Thanks for posting that link. I am listening now.  I am not sure how I feel
about what she is saying. First of all, she asks that we do reading on our
own and deeply reflect on metacognitive strategies we use as we read.  As I
think of what I do when I read, it is mainly three things--  go back and
re-read (when I have lost my train of thought) or sometimes break apart a
word to figure out what it means (based on its parts), and sometimes wonder
things.  I do NOT actively seek out to do things like make connections or
summarize.  I don't make a point to access my schema before I start reading.
These are all things my brain does automatically when I'm reading text at my
level.  If I were reading about something I don't know much about, say, ice
fishing, it doesn't matter how much I try to access my schema, I'm not going
to comprehend the text because I HAVE no schema.  Here's another thought: if
I had to stop reading after every page and think about making connections,
etc. I would probably hate reading.

We have really done a good job filling our bookroom/classrooms with texts for
our 5th grade boys for independent reading and bookclubs (nonfiction,
 adventure,
sports, a variety of magazines) and now we are looking to add graphic
 novels.?
Although we have a few titles, I'm wondering if anyone has a source we can go
 to
to order more titles at a variety of levels.

 Thank you all!

Re: [MOSAIC] Strategy Book List

Two great resources that I have used for our bookroom are:
The Booksource (they have a catalog just with reading comprehension strategies)
www.booksource.com

Schoolwide, Inc @ www.schoolwideonline.com

You can order catalogs from both.

 Hello All,

Our school librarian will be ordering books for our library and I'm excited
because I plan on giving her a list of book titles to buy!

A few years back, I gave her a list with many titles for strategies based on
 the
old Mosaic book, so many of those titles are in our library. I don't have the
new edition (yet), but anticipate getting it soon. BUT--the book order will
 happen before that.

My question is, is there a new updated book list for the strategies in the
 new
edition? And does anybody have a copy of it handy (emailable)?

 TIA,
 Liza

Re: [MOSAIC] community book

Our School did a whole school book read on the Tale of Despereaux. THe
families and students loved it! The principal asked questions each morning over
the loud speaker. Teachers addressed vocabulary in class and on the last day we
had a parade where everyone dressed up as a character of choice.

Kim we did something similar last year as well. I had obtained a grant for
funding the cost of the books, we read, Isabel of the Whales. We are a K-4
school, so younger children were read the story in the classrooms or at home
 by
an adult and older kids could read on their own. We had updates weekly on our
morning announcements and culminated with the author visiting the school and
 our
very own 30 ft Isabel whale. In the evening we had several activities for
families too. It was a good pick for older children - it was a bit
 complicated
for our younger students. But I've realized, you can't please everyone! We
 did
it in 4 weeks and that was just enough time to hold interest.
Some of the suggestions were non-fiction, but it sounds like you were able to
 do
that as well. You could always look into the more classic children's
 literature.
My first thoughts are Pictures of Hollis Woods, Loser, Esperanza
 Rising,
or Zachary Beaver Comes to Town. They are at a level that should be good for
most kids, and allow for serious discussions as a classroom. I'm not familiar
 with Zack File books either.
 Good luck!

Last year our second - fifth grade school did a book for all families
to read. It was the Mystery on Mackinac Island. We had many activites
including a film and fudge night with a sing along. We did this in
part to encourage all our families to read at home. March is reading
month in the state of Michigan so we culminated this project with an
open house. Familes came to school again to see our writing displays,
art displays and to enjoy an ice cream social.

We are looking for a title for our next book. Someone suggested the
Zack File books since they are exciting and easy to read. Does anyone
know these books or have a different suggestion? Thanks for your
 thoughts.
