This weekend I was looking in a box of some old books that I had a
child and I found 3 "Student Reading Record" forms from when I was in
6th, 7th, and 8th grade. These are some of the books I read as a
middle schooler, so I thought these may be some good books that your
students may be interested in. Most of these book have female main
characters and have different cultural backgrounds.

Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell
-A girl living alone on an island

Black Star, Bright Dawn by Scott O'Dell
-A girl takes her father's place in an Alaskan dog sled race

Number the Stars by Lois Lowry (This was one of my favorites)
-A girl helps her Jewish friend escape the Nazis

Shabanu: Daughter of the Wind by Suzanne Fisher Staples
-A Pakistani girl not wanting to obey her father's wishes of an
arranged marriage

Phoenix Rising By Karen Hesse

The Music of Dolphins by Karen Hesse
- A girl is raised by dolphins. when the coast guards find her she
slowly starts to learn how to speak.

Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse
-A girl living through the dust bowl she writes in her journal of the
strifes she's faced with

Letters From Rifka by Karen Hesse
-1919 a young Jewish girl from Russia is unable to enter America
because she has ringworm and her family has to leave her behind

I teach ELL students in our middle school 6-8th grade. On Fridays I read aloud
from grade level chapter books. We just finished the Watson's Go to
Birmingham. My 8th grade this year is all girls. They would like me to read a
book to just their class that is for girls.

Any suggestions for young adult books around 150 pages (we only read aloud on
Fridays) for girls?

Thanks so much for your help.
