Hi!
I taught adult ESL/EFL classes in Brazil and used a lot of trade books to
teach. My students did not think the activities were too elementary ... I think
it depends on the book you choose and the level of your students. I did a lot
of graphic organizers with them with comparing and contrasting characters or
stories. Many fairytales are universal (like Cinderella, Little Red Riding
Hood), so it is a good opportunity to teach new vocabulary using a story they
are already familiar with. There are so many great nonfiction trade books out
there, too, that you could also use to teach vocabulary. Hope that helps ...
