I had success with Timothy Rasinski's Fluency Development Lesson. It is
basically a structured repeated reading of a short poem. If you can get your
hands of his book The Fluent Reader , you will see it clearly described. The
book has many other wonderful ideas for improving fluency!

I am teaching a struggling group of third graders this year. They fall down
on fluency because they are reading so slowly. It is not so much that they
don't know the vocabulary. Any suggestions on how to build fluency with
third graders? In the past I have used Reader's Theater, choral reading
(poems in two voices) and buddy reading. I am looking for anything else you
might suggest. Thanks.

Also, do any of you use a program for old-fashioned grammar (writing
mechanics) or do you strictly do that through your individual conferencing
and mini-lessons?

Thanks.

I also use Six Minute Solution for fluency development. 2 books
elementary level and upper level. The reading are interesting and more
text vs. Reads Naturally. However, rds. ntly does offer comprehension
questions and 6 min. solution does not. But does offer high frequency
word lists/phonetic practice and comprehension webs.

A question regarding readers theater for struggling readers, do you feel
it is enough practice to increase the word mileage these students need
to increase skills/fluency? Would appreciate anyones comments-thanks.
I tried a fun readers theater last year and found it took lots of time
over a couple of weeks and too much down time for kids waiting for their
reading parts. Maybe it was too long of a reading??? They did have fun
but not sure it was the best use of my intervention time for 3rd/4th
graders. ? thanks, Gina Barghini, Reading Recovery/ reading specialist

I have seen good results from the program Read Naturally. This is
something that parents can be trained to do, as well.

In one of our high schools, we have used karaoke to help with fluency.
Maybe karaoke could help these students as well. I would be interested
to see if it would.
Hope this helps,
