I = spotted several rafts of ducks just inside the park entrance on the bay = side. One of the rafts had 5 Black Scoters and one White-wing Scoter. = Most of the ducks were Greater Scaup, Ring-necked Duck and Redhead. = There were some other rafts that had Buffleheads, Hooded Mergansers, = Common Merganser and lots of Mallards and Black Ducks. While looking for Spotted Towhee there must of been some good raptor = migrants as I saw several Rough-legged Hawks, Red-tail Hawks and Bald = Eagles. [mou] Tundra Swans Mpls. city lakes
While driving home from work today I 'looped' the city lakes and found 47 tundra swans on Lake Calhoun and 49 on Lake Harriet... mostly adults, but some first-year birds. The gulls were most active but with my compact binocs and the sleet coming down it was difficult to ID any. One very large, dark gull caught my eye but it got lost in the sleet. I imagine the swans will stay the night, so morning might reveal even more surprises. Chet Meyers Hennepin County
