[mou] Summer Tanager, Cerulean Warbler - Wood Lake Nature Center, Hennepin County
The Summer Tanager reported yesterday by Per Johansson was present again at 8:00 this morning, on the east side of the lake near the Grette bench. =20 The Cerulean Warbler was viewed from the Nature Center parking lot, singing near the Porta-Potty. This is the first time I have seen a Cerulean Warbler at Wood Lake in 12 years of regular visits. Also observed this morning were numerous Scarlet Tanagers, 17 spp of warblers including 4 Bay-Breasteds, and a Philadelphia Vireo. Doug Kieser Minneapolis

[mou] a few good birds
I found an adult lapland longspur in my yard today. The Baltimore oriole that I found three day's ago is still visiting my fruit feeder. I still have several sparrows around as well. [mou] Hooded Warbler/Otter Tail Co.
A male Hooded Warbler was spotted in Black's Grove Park (west of the town of Wadena) just off State Hwy 29 in east-central Otter Tail County today (5/15) at 1:00pm. From the parking lot go beyond the covered picnic shelter (an imposing log structure) and take the trail where the orange bridge crosses the creek (note: this is NOT the smaller orange bridge that you can see from the old log cabin). Follow the meandering grass trail until you reach a T, then turn left. This trail has been scalped down to bare dirt. Travel approximately 100 yards to where the trail takes a sharp turn right. This is the area where the bird was seen. All four observers got two, good, unobstructed views within 20 yards of the bird. A thrill! observers: Dan Sandy Thimgan, Eddy Judy Edwards -- Dan Sandy Thimgan Battle Lake, MN Otter Tail County
[mou] Lark Sparrows/Louisville Swamp
While my son, Alex, and I were doing a survey on the Louisville swamp Unit of the MN Valley Wildlife Refuge, I noted a male and female pair of Lark Sparrows. The birds were seen from the path leading from the SW corner of the main parking area toward the swamp. This path runs along a prairie remnant that is being restored and has been burned in the last week. The sparrows were easily spotted because of the burn. While not specifically looking for warblers, we saw or heard 16 species. Also heard a Wood Thrush and saw Swainson's. (As of 5 PM, the Piping Plover was not at the previously posted site-ditto at 6:30) ` John Ellis- St. Paul

We began in fog at 33 degrees. We visited about half of the sites I had targeted. That's the bad news. The good news is that we had (first rough count) 142 species. There were two Cattle Egrets at the Annandale sewage ponds. At two small wet areas south of #39 and about 2 or 3 miles east of #8 we found 13 shorebird species, including one Avocet. We also found all four terns, five woodpeckers, eight flycatchers including three sightings of a Western Kingbird, all six swallows, 20 warblers including Cape May and Bay-breasted, and 10 sparrows. [mou] Western and Northwestern Minnesota
Spent the last 4 days birding various areas of western and northwestern Minnesota. Most unusual birds were as follows: Black Scoter-Thief River Falls sewage ponds on the AM of the 14th Merlin-apparent nesting bird in the Oak Grove cemetery next to Red Lake Falls (Red lake County), no nest found but bird was harassing us and calling for us to leave, typical Taiga race, noon on the 14th Rough-legged Hawk-for us very unusual for May but for others maybe not, one in East Park WMA in Marshall County and one about 6 miles north of this same area in Kittson County, early PM on the 13th Short-eared Owl-Marshall County, corner of County Road 114 (Pembina Trail) and County Road 6, unusual because came out before 7:00 PM and landed on a fence post next to the parked car and there was enough light to get excellent photos Dennis and Barbara Martin dbmar...@skypoint.com
