[mou] Osprey question

I'm posting this question for a colleague at work.

She lives in Orono (western Hennepin County, near Lake Minnetonka) close to
an osprey platform where nesting has occurred for the past number of years.

In the past week, an osprey (she's unsure if it's an adult or juvenile) has
started building a next across the street at the top of a power pole.

She's curious if anyone can give her a hint about what might be going on?
Are the adults switching over to another nest. Are other osprey moving into
the neighborhood? Are the juveniles building.

Thanks for any info you can share. You can write me off the listserv if you
like:

[mou] Birdbath Question

2006-08-25 Thread Bill Bruins
I have a lot of luck with a bird bath on the ground that is kept full
with a dripper. It is also very near the base of a service berry bush
that provides
refuge and staging for the comings and goings of the many birds that use it.

Question for someone? We have a bird bath hanging by the feeder.
However, the birds seem to be turning up their beaks at it even
though we change the water daily. It does seem to get dirty rather
quickly but we don't ever see them in it. I am beginning to wonder,
based on what I see floating in it, if one of them is chewing
tobacco and using it as a personal spittoon! Any ideas on what the
problem is? Color? Are they expecting a fully tiled shower instead?
Suggestions welcome.

[mou] Yellow Medicine County Carolina Wren

On Friday, August 25th, 2006 I visited the Upper Sioux Agency State Park
Campground southeast of Granite Falls in Yellow Medicine County to check for
fall migrating warblers. A total of 16 Warbler species were observed along
with an Olive-sided Flycatcher and a Yellow-bellied Flycatcher. Warbler
species seen included Northern Parula, Morning, Blackburnian, Blackpoll,
Wilson's and Canada among others.

The highlight of the day was the Carolina Wren seen and observed singing at
12:05 p.m. The Wren and the rest of the species were seen in the Walk-In
Campsites area which is on the southwest side of the campground in the
wooded area between the bank of the Yellow Medicine River and the entrance
road into the campground.
