This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Wednesday, May 30th 2007.

On May 30th, Shawn Zierman discovered a pair of SNOWY PLOVER on
Minnesota Point in Duluth. Both birds were on the lakeside shoreline
near the Sky Harbor Airport, and at least one was still present later in
the day.

The ARCTIC TERN was seen as recently as the 29th over Lake Superior on
Park Point in Duluth. It has been found at various locations along the
lake shore, but most often from the 31st Street access.

I have a secondhand report of a SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER from May 27th,
at the Minnesota State University Moorhead Regional Science Center near
Buffalo River State Park in Clay County. The bird was seen flying over
the prairie just to the east of the parking area at the science center.

On the 28th, a singing PRAIRIE WARBLER was found at Ritter Farm Park in
Dakota County. From the main parking lot walk northwest and follow the
signs to the orange trail. After a couple hundred yards where the trail
forks, take the muddy horesetrail up the hill to a row of conifers on
the right. The bird was singing from the large deciduous trees on the
left.

Unusually far out of range was the COMMON MOORHEN reported on the 29th
from western Duluth by Laura Erickson. It was along the Western
Waterfront Trail beneath the Indian Point campground.

On May 30th, Kelly Larson reported two YELLOW-BREASTED CHATS from the
Prairie Auto Tour Route of Big Stone NWR in Big Stone County. Both birds
were seen near the restroom and parking lot facility in the interior of
the route. One bird was directly behind the restroom in a shrubby patch
of woods and the other was across the road in the flooded woodlands to
the west. Another Chat was reported by Herb Dingman from near Walnut
Lake in Faribault County over the weekend. The location was one mile
north of I-90 on county road 119 near its junction with an unmarked
gravel road.

The next scheduled update of this tape is Thursday, June 7th 2007.

[mou] Common Loon in Crosby Park

2007-05-30 Thread Julian Sellers
Not earth-shaking, perhaps, but in my 28 years in St. Paul, I have never seen a
loon in Crosby Park until this morning. It was in the middle of Crosby Lake.

[mou] Prairie warbler still present

2007-05-30 Thread Robin LaFortune
Hi,

My sister and I watched the Ritter Park prairie warbler sing in the wind today
at about 11:30am. He was in the scraggley elm described by Chet Meyers
previously. When we swung back after a long hike around the park, he had moved
to the opposite side of the trail, further south.

I also found a black-billed cuckoo cucucu-ing at the back of our woods this am.

I have looked at a number of pictures of snowy plovers now and I'm pretty
sure that what I saw was two snowy plovers at Minnesota Point this morning,
Duluth, MN. 8-10am. They associated with sanderlings which are still
plentiful. If anyone has an opportunity to get down to the point today to try
and get another sighting of the birds that would be awesome. They could be
found on the Lakeside shoreline near the airport.
  :) Shawn Zierman.

[mou] ID this PLOVER

2007-05-30 Thread sc...@aol.com
This morning on Minnesota Point, I found two plovers that I was not able to
id. I am familiar with semipalmated plovers and how they present in this
setting- I've seen many. These two were different. They moved across the
sand
with much greater rapidity. They have a broken breastband, a finer all black
bill, they do not appear to have any eye ring. I'm wondering if they were
not snowy plovers, but my pictures (which are not the greatest, the fog was
thicker than thick), don't seem to quite look like the ones on MOU from the
nesting pair last year. Can someone help id them? Thanks for anyfeedback.
Shawn Zierman.

[mou] Big Stone Y-b Chat

2007-05-30 Thread Kelly
Just returned from SW MN Birding Weekend in Luverne/Pipestone. My first
MNBW, had a great time and saw lots of good birds - Thank you Kim and
Craig! Took and extra day to bird Big Stone county on Tuesday before
heading back to Bemidji.

At Big Stone NWR along the Prairie Auto Tour route I heard and then
spotted two Yellow-breasted Chat. Both where located at the restroom
and parking lot facility in the interior of the route. One bird was
directly behind the restroom in an overgrown, shrubby patch of woods.
The second was across the road from the parking lot to the west in the
flooded woodland tangle.

[mou] Kunkel WMA, Mille Lacs County

2007-05-30 Thread Pastor Al Schirmacher
Yellow-billed and Black-billed Cuckoos, Kunkel WMA (Mille Lacs County, just
off 95 & CR 5, few miles west of 169).

Kunkel is an interesting area, while still in Mille Lacs County is south
enough to attract birds that are unusual for the area (eg, had Grasshopper
and Field Sparrows there this morning, neither typical for the county).
Kunkel is not an "A" birding spot, but a decent "B", occasionally drawing
interesting birds like Carolina Wren and Henslow's Sparrows over the last
couple of years. Cuckoos are relatively reliable in the summer.

Good birding to all!

[mou] Common Moorhen in Duluth

2007-05-30 Thread Laura Erickson
Yesterday, one of the people on my weekly warbler walk to the Western
Waterfront Trail (beneath the Indian Point campground) spotted a Common
Moorhen at the far side of the marsh. It was at a distance and the light
was poor, but I did take and post a lousy but identifiable photo of it on my
blog at
http://lauraerickson.blogspot.com/2007/05/last-western-waterfront-trail-spring.html

There is symbolic as well as actual beauty in the migration of birds. There
is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature--the
assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after the winter.
