[mou] Loons in Ramsey County
As many people have already mentioned, open water is drawing concentrations of waterfowl in the Twin Cities area. I stopped at a small lake in the town of White Bear Lake today. I think the name of it is Goose Lake. Just south of downtown White Bear Lake there are small lakes on both sides of Hwy 61. I know that the one on the east side is Goose Lake and I think the one on the west side is connected and is also considered to be Goose Lake. The one on the west side was open today and held 60 Common Loons. It also had the following: Ring-necked Duck (at least 100) Great Egret (1) Coot (about 50) Ruddy Duck (1) Redhead (3) Red-breasted Merganser (about 10 pair) Pied-billed Grebe (10) American Wigeon (one pair) Lesser Scaup (5) I wouldn't have thought that this little lake was even big enough for a loon to take off from. [mou] Great Blue Heron
There was a great blue heron wading in a creek by the side of the road near the turnoff to my house this evening at 6 PM. There is no other open water around except in Virginia's Silver Lake. Turnoff is approximately 13 miles north of Virginia (NE SLC) on Hwy 53 (at county road #65). Karen Sussman Karen Sussman ksussman at lcp2.net -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Sorry folks, A bit of a correction to my recent post. the correct URL is: http://radar.weather.gov As soon as I get the monkey trained I'll fire myself Roger Everhart Apple Valley, MN
[mou] Radar Imagery Sites
Hi everyone, I've had a few people ask me for the sites where I check the nexrad images for indications of migration. The best site is: http://weather.radar.gov I do have another spot bookmarked with the really long URL below: www.rap.ucar.edu/weather/radar/displayRad.php?icao=KUSA&prod=n0r&b kgr=black&endDate=20050421&endTime=-1&duration=0 What I like about this one is that it is a composite map that let's you look at the entire country at one time. I don't know of any radar sites for Mexico but I'm sure they're out there somewhere. One person did mention that the gulf coast of Alabama has seen a couple of fall out mornings so there is at least some movement in the eastern gulf area. I don't know if there have been any big lift offs from the Yucatan Peninsula headed to Texas. A good site for a basic introduction to Radar Ornithology is the Journey North website: http://www.learner.org/jnorth/weather/radar/index.html Again tonight it looks like northward movement in the central U.S. but further east than last night. This may be due to a cold front moving south through the Dakotas and Minnesota. I hope this helps folks find good images for their area. [mou] Duluth birds....
Spent the better half of the morning, 4/15/08, birding 40th avenue west and Minnesota Point in Duluth. The strong south winds clearly blew in some migrants today. At 40th avenue west I observed the following: several ringbilled ducks, several wood ducks,(FOY) several hooded mergansers including 4 males doing all kinds of antics for one female, very entertaining:) 1 northern shrike, 2 northern flickers, (FOY) several song sparrows, (FOY) and for the insect lovers, my FOY mourning cloak butterfly. Near Minnesota Point: American White Pelican (FOY) At Minnesota Point: Northern Shoveler (FOY) Pied Billed Grebe (FOY) 2 Osprey (FOY) Approx. 30 sharp shinned hawks (FOY) At least 20 red tailed hawks Several Turkey Vultures, Rough legged Hawks, Bald Eagles, Frankly there were MANY raptors moving down the shoreline of Minnesota Point this mid morning riding the strong southern current northward, many of these I was not able to identify with certainty. In the 1 and half hours that I was at Minnesota Point, I would put a conservative estimate of 150 to 200 raptors seen. The sharp shinneds were moving down the shoreline quite low in the sky, great fun to watch but very hard to track with binocs due to the speed of their flight. Happy Birding. [mou] Maple Grove birds
Another sweet day and just a list: Pileated Woodpecker Winter Wren Beautiful Cooper's Hawk again Chipping Sparrows Hooded Merganser on the lake No snipe or woodcocks No owls Fox Sparrows galore and Hermit Thrushes and Robins Many more now regulars for a bit Dang, I tried to make just a list but the adjectives and flowery just came through. Maybe next time. I did find a great Chickadee nest in a 2.5 foot stump only 18 inches above the ground. Probably great for photography with a tripod and timer. Wasn't too put off by my walking by and discovering it. Came out of the nest and took off and soon came back with the other bird still in the nest. Thomas Maiello Angel Environmental Management, Inc. [mou] Carver County
This morning the wind was more of a bother to me than to the birds. Carver Park was fairly quiet, but the Osprey has returned to the stand as you turn onto the road leading to the nature center. Both Coopers and Sharp-shinned Hawks were in the area. Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Meadowlarks, Phoebes, Fox Sparrow, and Bluebirds have increased in numbers. Still very little ice-free water in the park. Ring-necked Duck, Blue-winged Teal, Wood Duck, Egrets, and Great Blue Heron were in the ponds. The highlight at Carver Parks was not even a bird. There was a River Otter sliding on the ice from King Blind. Next stop at the wetlands near the Chevalle neighborhood in Chaska turned up a single Horned Grebe. Otherwise numbers were up over this past weekend including more Scaup, Ring-necked Duck, Bufflehead, Hooded Merganser, Coot, and a single Canvasback. Chaska Lake is completely free of ice, but was empty of any ducks save for a pair of Wood Ducks and Mallard. Around the lake, there was a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, a Brown Creeper and a small mixed flock of Ruby-crowned Kinglets and Yellow-rumped Warblers. Other hawks in a few areas, Peregrine Falcon near the intersection of Audobon Rd and 212 in Chaska, American Kestrel in Carver Park, Turkey Vulture at Chaska Lake, Osprey at Chaska Lake, and 3 adult Bald Eagles in different locations. [mou] Lower Penn Lake Today...
Hello...Took an early lunch break to check out Lower Penn Lake at 86th St W and Penn Ave in Bloomington. In addition to the usual Canada geese and mallards, some of the common loons were still there. At one point, I think I counted 12 (no binocs in the car ;-( ...Also saw a pie-billed grebe--and about 30 double-crested cormorants circled over the lake, landed, and then hung out for a while, taking off just before I did. This all happened today (Tues) between 10:30 and 11:15am. Good birding! Kathy Confer PS: Yesterday, on my way to work around 9am, I passed a perched adult bald eagle in a tree next to the Cedarholm Golf Course pond on Hwy 36 between Hamline and Snelling. Then, on my way home around 6:15, I saw my first glimpse of an osprey on the platform in the wetlands on the east side of Lexington Ave, just north of Co Rd C-2. I do not know if this is one of the ospreys that nested here last year. If I can locate and read a band in the next few days, I'll check with the Twin Cities osprey project to verify.

After help with looking at my pictures, it is doubtful that we saw the Mew Gull this morning. The bird that I thought was a Mew Gull has been identified by an expert as a Ring-billed Gull. FYI I recieved a report of a single Varied Thrush from a resident in Britt (36-60-18). It came in, with the snow storm, on April 11th. It has been coming to his feeder daily. It likes crumb cake. [mou] Sunny but windy
Yesterday early run to Mapleton from Beauford: Small ponds just east of Beauford and north CR10 the west pond pretty much iced, which concentrated a group of 12 Ring-necks, 4 Blue-wing teal, a pair of Shovelers, and in the middle a Canada-very cute The larger pond on the eastside about 75% iced but looking directly into the low sun coudn't really identify any of the numerous ducks definitively Just down CR10 from there a small pond alonside the road that gives about as close as possible without a blind ducks there seem to be used to traffic there are two sets of Wood-duck houses posted there and a male on sitting on each gorgeous in the morning sun My favorite pond north of Perch Lake held a large number of Ring-Necks a few Blue-Wing Teal, 2 pair of Buffleheads, some Mallards, a pair of Pintails, 3 pair of Wood-Ducks, and 12 Red-Heads and with bright sun their heads stood out beautifully. The Pintails flew in and lit, while I watched, spectacular. Percch Lake was windswept and large numbers of ducks were congregated on the lee side ,which was a long way away, but on the roadside not far out there were two groups of divers. One was difficult because they were bouncing all over in the waves, but sense was that they were One of the Scaup as they were much more white on their sides than Ring-Necks. The other were easily identifiable as Canvas-Backs. On a hill off the south shore is a beautiful Surrounded by large Cottonwood and Oak trees, my wife and I counted 10 Wood-Ducks sitting in the trees, and two more lit when we drove away. I stopped using Ring-Bill when I realized they could be gulls as well as ducks. Couldn't help wondering what it was like around here before WE came. More ponds, marshes, small lakes, and the noise around same must have been deafening in the spring. John Nelson Near Beauford

[mou] Wood Lake Nature Center Great Horned Owl, urban Sapsuckers
We went for a little hike around Wood Lake Nature Center yesterday afternoon, around 2:45. Approximately 1 minute after I moaned to my companions, "Man, wouldn't it be awesome to see an owl?" I looked up and spotted one! I'm pretty sure I'm magic. This Great Horned Owl (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mnutting/2416533546/) was perched pretty high up in a tree on the west side of the lake, about half way between the visitor center and the bridge that crosses the marsh. The tree was between the path and the lake. Other than this owl, the Ring-billed Gulls were plentiful, along with mallards and Canada Geese. We saw a lone Wood Duck, many Red-winged Blackbirds, and an unidentified, yet non-House, sparrow hopping around beneath one of the feeders at the visitor center. A pair of large hawks flew over at one point, briefly scattering the gulls. Earlier yesterday morning, while trying to get a photo of some kind of Thrush that has been hanging around the yard, I heard a loud racket coming from a pine tree in the yard next door -- a loud and frantic mewing of some sort. I couldn't tell if it was mammal or bird or what. Soon enough, a pair of Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers flew out and landed on a neighboring tree (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mnutting/2416548636/)! So that was another wonderful surprise! It's amazing what we're able to see right here in the middle of the city. Molly Nutting Uptown, Minneapolis
[mou] about the Metro
Yesterday (Monday) in my yard there were good numbers of thrushes with a FOY Veery (larger and not as red as the Hermits). Also several Fox Sparrows. Carlson Lake a block from home had three Red-breasted male Mergansers and two Hooded. I did not have time to seperate the females. My yard is a convention every morning with Hoodies and Woodies lining up for the boxes. It is almost impossible to approach my window without scaring ducks from the trees.
