[mou] Prothonotary in Maplewood Nature Center, Ramsey County?

2008-05-06 Thread hags...@aol.com
I searched for the Prothonotary Warbler after work today and was told by a
couple I approached that they'd seen it just two minutes prior to my arrival at
that spot. ?It seems from the other posts related to this (these?) birds that
the area close to the entrance is a likely place to find the bird. ?The folks
who saw it this evening (5/5) found it on the little island to the left as you
enter the trail from the parking lot.

One point of clarification - I looked at my maps to verify the county Maplewood
Nature Center is in, and it looks like it's in Ramsey County, not Washington.
?Is this correct?

Other birds seen:

Common Yellowthroat

Northern Waterthrush

Yellow Warbler

Black and White Warbler

Lincoln's Sparrow (just 1)

?

Yesterday (May 4) I checked on the owl nest in northern Meeker County that I
initially discovered a couple of months ago. ?I'm happy to report that mama
Great Horned Owl was sitting next to one big owlet. ?The nest is on 617th Av.,
about .1 mile north of 365th St. ?This is just southeast of Eden Valley.

[mou] Carolina Wren at Crosby Park, St. Paul

2008-05-06 Thread Julian Sellers
At about 8:30 this morning, I heard a Carolina Wren singing in Crosby Park in
St. Paul. The park is along the Mississippi, below Shepard Road, between the
MN 5 bridge to Fort Snelling and the I-35E bridge. The bird was on the south
side of Crosby Lake (the big lake), roughly somewhat to the west of the center
point of the lake, probably a three-quarter-mile hike from the main parking
area at the west end, and a half-mile from the east end. At this location, the
paved trail is about 100 yards from the lake shore. I didn't have time to look
for the bird, but I'm positive of the song ID.

2008-05-06 Thread Frank Berdan
Good numbers of Horned Grebes were noted on Lake
Superior this morning, as well as a single river
otter, off the 9400 block of North Shore Scenic Drive.

A survey between McQuade and Lester River (binoculars
only, bicycle-based) tallied:
2 Canada Geese
3 Mallard
8 Bufflehead
3 Common Mergansers
8 Red-breasted Mergansers
14 Common Loons
249 Horned Grebes
5 Red-necked Grebes

And the Mockingbird posted by Dave Grosshuesch was
refound at 910 a.m. Good BGBY bird. Thanks, Dave.

I found a Northern Mockingbird yesterday in Duluth
at 57th and Juniata St. The bird was foraging
around the neighborhood throughout the late
afternoon. A great yard bird for us and the first
new species added in 2008. Numerous sparrows
continue to be at our feeder, with as many as 8
 species found last weekend.

[mou] Clark's Grebe, Ross's Goose at Thielke L; Yellow Rails at McGregor

2008-05-06 Thread Kim R Eckert
Early yesterday afternoon, May 5, I saw both a Clark's Grebe and a
Ross's Goose on Thielke Lake in Big Stone Co. Both were observed from
Co Rd 62, which runs along the S side of the lake. The Clark's
initially was by itself on the E half of the lake, but it eventually
joined the main group of ~40 Western Grebes on the W side. The late-
lingering Ross's Goose was an adult on the E half of the lake, closely
associating with a pair of Canada Geese.

Then yesterday night, between 11:15 and 11:25 pm, at least 2 Yellow
Rails were heard calling in the McGregor marsh in Aitkin Co. Both were
on the E side of Hwy 65: one was quite close to the road near mile
marker 116, which is 0.7 mi S of the Hwy 210 intersection; the other
was quite far from the road and hard to hear, 0.8 mi S of 210.

Other birds of note found yesterday were 13 late Cackling Geese on the
Wheaton sewage ponds, a Western Kingbird along Traverse Co Rd 76 just
E of Mud L, and a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher along the Big Stone NWR's auto
tour in Lac Qui Parle Co.

[mou] Ross's Goose? Lake Vadnais

2008-05-06 Thread Gail Wieberdink
This morning we saw this goose in the western section of Lake Vadnais, right
along the road off Rice Street. Is this a Ross's goose or some type of
domestic goose? I've never seen a Ross's up close but it looks like one
except it has a bit of black on the back of its neck. It must have flown in
sometime yesterday afternoon or last night, it was not there yesterday
morning. I've posted some photos here:

Would appreciate some ID help.
Thanks!

Thanks everyone for taking the time to look at the photos and share

wonder, though, how a domestic goose shows up in the middle of a city;-)
We'll keep tabs on it and see how long it hangs around.

2008-05-06 Thread KCTEPO00
I was just about to post about a visit to Dodge Nature Center, but Jeff Fischer
beat me to it. In addition to everything Jeff already posted, I saw:

Several ovenbirds, Hermit and Swainson's Thrushes, a courting House Wren
(apparently touring his potential mate to multiple nest sites, singing at each
stop; pretty neat to watch!) and a singing Alder Flycatcher, seen near the big
pond west of the 'prairie' area near the main entrance. As Jeff mentioned
there were Sora- I was able to find two, in separate marshes/ponds, very close
to the trail!

Everyone is welcome to come and watch. Oh yes, there are a lot of warblers

Yoli and I went last night for a while and again this morning.

The migrant list for the day:

black and white warbler
black throated green warbler - see

blue gray gnat catcher
Baltimore oriole
palm warbler
warbling vireo
yellow throated vireo (heard only)
yellow rumped warbler
yellow warbler
empidonax flycatcher

Judith Sparrow and Gary Ash were also there and their list was longer.
I hope the weather holds for the weekend.

[mou] 20 Red-throated Loons, Little Gull, Piping Plover at Duluth

2008-05-06 Thread Peder Svingen
For most of the afternoon today (6 May), light winds and good lighting
produced excellent viewing of birds on Lake Superior from the public
access sites on Park Point. Between 5:20 and 6:10 PM, I watched 19 Red-
throated Loons from the Beach House at the Park Point Recreation Area.
The birds were far enough off shore to require a spotting scope, but
the excellent viewing conditions left no doubt as to their identity.
At almost the same time, Kim Eckert found a Red-throated Loon off 31st
Street (Lafayette Square), making a total of 20 Red-throateds off Park
Point this evening.

I found an adult Little Gull among a large gathering of Bonaparte's
Gulls on Lake Superior off 22nd Street in the late afternoon; it was
refound by Kim Eckert off Canal Park at about 7:00 PM, where most of
the gulls seen earlier between 12th Street and the Recreation Area had
assembled into a noisy congregation.

A record high spring migration total of 4,153 Bonaparte's Gulls was
carefully counted by groups of 10 at Park Point between 3:15 and 6:15
PM today (6 May). Not included in this total were flocks of 775
Bonaparte's seen earlier in the day near the mouth of Miller Creek off
27th Ave West and 943 Bonaparte's on the back side of Hearding Island,
since they were assumed to be part of the evening congregation at
Canal Park. Kim and I estimated that more than 3,000 Bonaparte's Gulls
gathered at Canal Park in the early evening -- not including a large
flock that passed overhead.

Other highlights at Park Point:
Horned Grebe -- total of 902, relatively late peak count
Piping Plover -- unbanded bird still present at 22nd Street access
Willet -- three between 12th Street and 22nd Street
Ruddy Turnstone -- one at 22nd Street access
Sanderling -- three at 22nd Street access
Forster's Tern -- two at Recreation Area (Common Tern, which has a
median arrival date of 1 May in northern Minnesota, has yet to be
found at Duluth this spring).
