[mou] Miesville Trip this Sunday
I will be leading a MRVAC sponsored field trip this Sunday to Miesville Ravine, a Dakota County Park south of Miesville on the Canon River. We will meet at the north parking lot at the early hour of 6:30am. the park is about an hour south of the cities. Non members are welcome to join us. Both cuckoos and Acadian Flycatcher have been reported here recently. Last year we had Cerulan Warbler, Scarlet Tanager and Wood Thrush. [mou] black-throated green warbler, minnehaha falls, mpls
A black-throated green warbler was easily seen singing from the top of an oak behind the Stevens House at Minnehaha Falls this morning. I heard it first at 6:25 am and it was still singing at 6:55 when I passed by again. From the white Stevens House (historical site near the falls), go to the SE corner of its white picket fence. There is a large oak just off this fence corner. The bird was singing from the top of this tree. Seems pretty late for a black-throated green? Diana Doyle S. [mou] RFI - Black-throated Blue Warblers near Grand Marais
Silly me! I should learn to be more specific! After sending this, I received numerous great responses recommending Oberg Mountain...I have actually birded there and found Black-throated Blues as well as other great birds. Unfortunately for me, my range will be more limited than that for the week I will be there...I'm working in the area and will probably be able to travel 10 miles from Grand Marais. What I should have asked is whether they can reasonably be expected at Cascade SP, Devil's Track, or any of the stretches of the Superior Hiking Trail 10 miles from GM. Thanks to everyone who responded; and next time I'll be more careful with my inquiries! I am wondering if anyone can tell me where the closest place to Grand Marais where I would have a reasonable shot at finding breeding Black-throated Blue Warblers is. [mou] passenger needed?
Could any car going on the Aitkin County birding trip this Saturday from the Twin Cities use another passenger? It would help on your gas costs and environmental costs of my driving myself. [mou] Western Kingbirds/Eurotrash
Ran into Western Kingbirds twice this week: downtown Paynesville, Stearns County on Tuesday perched on aerials on drug store twice between 11 and noon and also hanging out to the south in a large tree just south of Hwy 23 and one along U.S. Hwy 12 at the wetland on the immediate west end of town. There was a Eurotrash-type Dove, maybe 2, along Hwy 23 in Paynesville just south of city hall (main street). Bob Russell, USFWS -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... [mou] Western Kingbird, Cokato, Wright County
Sorry. The location of the second kingbird was at Cokato, Wright County along U.S. 12 in the vicinity of the first wetland west of town. Shouldn't write these on 4 hours of sleep. [mou] Purple Martins galore
Greetings:? ? ?I have known for years about the Purple Martin houses in Warsaw at Lane Johnson's, whose house is just west of Farwell Avenue in City of Warsaw. ? But today, driving highway 12, west of Faribault I found another family who love Purple Martins. There are at least 200 gourds or? houses for Purple Maertin.? I guess I have been looking south when their house is on the north side of Highway 12. ? David and Diane Velzke live? 10 miles west of I-35.? To get there from Faribault? get off I-35 onto Highway 21 coming from either south or north.? From north go south to 7th Street and from south go north to 7th Street. Follow this to Highway 38, and go west to Highway 97.? Go south to Highway 12.? Velzke's driveway is marked by their name plate on south side of Highway 12 and the numbers 11565 are on a post there too ? Highway 60 is under construction west of Faribault and that is why it is so difficult to get to Highway 12. ? There are 6, or so, group of gourd houses and at least three wooden houses..? David Velzke said Purple Martins are a tradition with his family. His father and his son have Purple Martin Houses.? The son live in Waseca? David was very friendly and was glad we stopped to see his houses. He said he cleans the gourds with a wire coat hanger and it takes a lot of time. David said about 8:00 pm is when the martins return from feeding at various lakes in? the area on dragon flies. ? He told us to stop by again. ?
