[mou] shorebirds at Purgatory creek
Stopped by Purgatory Creek rec area in Eden Prairie today to check out shorebirds.? The leasts are still hanging around along with lots of Killdeer and a few spotted sandpipers.? I also saw one shorebird that had markings very similar to the lesast sandpiper.? However, it was larger, more the size of the killdeer and i was fortunate enough to have it standing right next to a least for comparison.? I was not able to get my scope to focus well enough to get a good look at the rump and lost track of the bird when I switched to binoculars.? If you happen to get over there and run across this sandpiper, I'd be interested to hear your ID. ? Ben -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... [mou] [mnbird] Found Budgie (Parakeet) - St. Paul
It turns that this Budgie is not the correct ID for the couple missing theirs, in the Mac-Groveland area of St. Paul. So unfortunately, this Budgie is still looking for his original owners. Its' markings are: yellow head - turquoise body - white rump - white & black tail Click link for picture: http://inlinethumb42.webshots.com/7081/2527106800066718885S600x600Q85.jpg Thanks so much for all your wonderful emails! [mou] Shorebirds in Nicollet and Sibley County
I went to 2 places today that were good for shorebirds this spring and I was not disappointed. At the new WMA just north of the town of Nicollet in Nicollet County and at the Gaylord Sewage Ponds just south of Gaylord in Sibley County there were well over 50 birds each including Short-billed Dowitchers(Nicollet only) and Stilt Sandpipers(both). The WMA is about 1.5 miles north of Hwy 99 on Hwy 111 on the east side of the road. Look for a gravel road flanked by yellow WMA signs just north of a farm house on the east side of the road. You can drive back to a parking area and walk a few hundred yards to the wetlands. This should continue to be a great shorebird spot. The Gaylord Sewage ponds are on the south side of Co. Rd. 67 just a short distance east of Hwy 22 south of town. Between the two I had 11 species of shorebird. At the Elysian Sewage Ponds I had 4 Caspian Terns and along 490th St. just north of Sakatah Lake in the far SW corner of Rice County I came upon a flock of about 400 Bank Swallows. [mou] Henslow's sparrow- Carver
Hi- Hiked around Carver PR this am, re- found the Henlow's sparrow reported by John Cyrus (his directions:To get to this location follow the main trail west of Lowry Nature Center(south of Crosby Lake). Continue until you get beyond Crosby Lake and out into a prairie area(closer to the hwy). He was calling from the top of a tall grass on the right side of the trail(right beside the trail).). This was the best look I've had of a Henlow's, and while I watched him sing, heard a second one also singing a bit further away. I also flushed 3 woodcock while walking the boardwalk in the bog. Otherwise, I saw a lot of expected species, but enjoyable none the less. I then decided to check the New Germany area and see how it was shaping up for shorebirds. I had to detour down to Waconia and thru Mayer, as HWY 7 is closed, but I didn't mind as I found singing dickcissels east of Waconia, along HWY 5, and in some weedy fields south of Mayer. The pools at New Germany do not have any good habitat yet for shorebirds, one pool is too high and the other 2 are chock full of marsh grass. I didn't get completely busted though, as I found a small flooded farm field just south of New Germany on 33 that had the following: 16 Greater Yellowlegs 4 Lesser Yellowlegs 10 Least Sandpipers 2 Pectoral Sandpipers 1 Wilson's Phalarope 1 Solitary Sandpiper Many Killdeer (including babies!!) I also saw the Red-headed woodpeckers that are usually in the area. Robin LaFortune Delano, MN -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... [mou] Thanks to all - Re: 2008 Spring Migrant ID help needed
All, Regarding my bird ID query - thanks to the many who responded! The consensus was Tennessee Warbler with a "black chinstrap" was simply caused by a ruffling or separation of the feathers - exposing darker feathers, skin or shadows below. [Also - this bird was in my flowering tree - which jives with a Tennessee Warbler according to Sibley guide. Although - I did try - I did not get a chance to record its song.] Again - thanks! I have added it to my yard-list for Minneapolis. [mou] [mnbird] sick bat
the wildlife rehab people in roseville might be able to help you. Although rabies does occur in bats, it isn't really that common. 651.486.WILD (9453) *Emergency Services:* Our core program is to provide emergency and long-term medical care to all species of wild animals. The number of wild animals admitted to WRC has increased from year to year. In 2004, we hit our record number of animal admits; totaling 8,295 for the year, most of whom are injured due to human conflicts and interactions. Once the animal is admitted, a team of professional staff focus on stabilizing the animal's condition and beginning the process of restoring its health. Trained volunteers continue the wild animal patients recovery by providing food, water and clean caging several times each day. Animals are rehabilitated in flight rooms or outdoor cages where they are conditioned and prepared for their return to the wild. We take special care to simulate each animal's natural environment and diet. We minimize human contact, a crucial rehabilitation aspect that is essential to the animal's ability to survive in the wild. Animals admitted to the WRC include: *Songbirds* such as: cardinals, finches, woodpeckers, nighthawks, orioles, swallows, shrikes, bluebirds, blue jays and killdeer. *Waterfowl* such as: kingfishers, snow geese, wood ducks, swans, pelicans, herons and loons. *Mammals* including: fox, opossums, deer, coyote, bears, beavers, mink, bats, flying squirrels and rabbits. *Reptiles* like snakes and turtles. *Avian, Waterfowl, and Mammal Nurseries* Our three nurseries "raise" more than 4,000 baby animals each year. Each nursery provides medical treatment and the nearly round-the-clock feeding necessary to help orphaned infant and juvenile wildlife mature and return to their natural habitats. When possible, orphans are housed with adult foster parent animals to lower stress and improve skill development. *Public Information, Assistance and Training* We work to educate the public about wildlife and encourage them to consider how their actions affect wild animals. Through our volunteers and literature, we strive to teach people how they can prevent unnecessary harm to wild animals and their habitat. In addition, the WRC provides training for veterinarians, wildlife rehabilitators and public officials. This includes hands-on wildlife experience, such as, basic handling, nutrition, husbandry, cage requirements and physical therapy. More advanced training extends to medical care. [mou] 2008 Spring Migrant ID help needed
Hi all, Back in April of this year - this bird came through my yard in South Minneapolis. I am new to warblers (and MN) - and I thought this was a Tennessee warbler - but the black band under the chin does not make sense (to my limited knowledge at least). I have scoured all 10 of my bird guides and even with these photos - and here it is July - and I remain still fuzzy/confused as to ID. Any help is appreciated - off line replies are fine. I have posted four snaps here: http://bp1.blogger.com/_AldAsksoNQE/SHRF8X726yI/AtU/PXAqPYAS9u4/s1600-h/DSC_0128.JPG http://bp3.blogger.com/_AldAsksoNQE/SHRFoZFUIsI/AtM/59XnSEGqYZA/s1600-h/DSC_0104.JPG http://bp3.blogger.com/_AldAsksoNQE/SHRFGiSPbfI/AtE/fMrZt9RPOKU/s1600-h/DSC_0029.JPG http://bp1.blogger.com/_AldAsksoNQE/SHRE1lQhR_I/As8/vCGdpKdiBDo/s1600-h/DSC_0026.JPG Cheers and kind regards, Ed On 7/8/2008 12:00 PM, mou-net-request at moumn.org wrote: > Send mou-net mailing list submissions to > mou-net at moumn.org > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > http://moumn.org/mailman/listinfo/mou-net_moumn.org > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > mou-net-request at moumn.org > > You can reach the person managing the list at > mou-net-owner at moumn.org > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of mou-net digest..." > > > Today's Topics: > >1. wandering whoopers coming to a wetland near you > (Robert_Russell at fws.gov) >2.
