[mou] MOU Mille Lacs Trip 10/25
We will be holding our annual fall Mille Lacs trip on Saturday, October 25th, starting at 7:30 AM. This trip is intentionally scheduled for loon migration, particularly the wandering Red-throated and Pacific that seem to have become annual on the lake. Last year we enjoyed Boreal Chickadees (bit of a shock), Snow Buntings, Pipits, Black-bellied Plovers, Rusty Blackbirds, few late warblers and other goodies. The trip should include scoping the western portion of the lake from different vantage points, and spending some time in Kathio and/or Hennepin State Parks (sticker required). Warm clothing (sounds strange right now) will probably be necessary. Trip is limited to 20-25 participants. Sign up by emailing me. No fees are required, although gas assistance for the car poolers is always helpful. Thanks! Al Schirmacher Princeton, MN Mille Lacs Sherburne Counties

[mou] MOU: ID Help
Sounds like the juvenile Eastern Towhee that I've got hanging out in my yard now. It has also discovered the goodies and easy pickings under our sunflower feeder Molly Jo Miller Inver Grove Hts, Dakota Co. -Original Message--- Date: Mon, 4 Aug 2008 21:54:25 -0500 From: Ken or Rebecca Vail Subject: [mou] ID Help: Dodge Co. To: MOU-net Message-ID: B7046B36B496406A82F56D1935594DEA at testPCmailto:B7046B36B496406A82F56D1935594DEA at testPC Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset=iso-8859-1; reply-type=original I consider myself a competent birder and do not often admit to being stumped. But this bird really has me baffled. This bird is visiting our bird feeder. I first noticed the bird two days ago but only noted its most prominent field mark a long dark tail bordered on the sides with white before it disappeared. On August 4, 2008 my wife, Rebecca, managed to get a few digital photos through the window of this bird. I have also taken some film photos (not yet developed) of the bird and will supply if desired. Description: Oriole-sized bird, dark gray/brown overall with a lighter breast, breast heavily streaked, conical grosbeak-like bill, a circular white wing patch. It's most notable field mark is a long dark tail with white borders (a long junco-like tail). Behavior: Eats the sunflower seed and forages in a shuffle-feet fashion typical of towhees and other emberizids. I attempted to upload a photo to the MOU website but was unable to do so. If you would like photos please contact me off-list and I will email them to you. I live in SW Dodge County and will supply detailed directions if this bird is determined to be of interest. [mou] Update: Dodge Co. Mystery bird
Thanks to all who responded to my call for ID help on an unknown bird in my yard. The consensus seems to be an aberrant juvenile E. Towhee. Most of the field marks (size, bill, color, white wing patch and its feeding behavior) fit a towhee. The one field mark that led to my plea for help was the extensive white on the tail. I realize towhees are supposed to have white on the tail near the terminal corners but this bird's tail literally looked like an elongated junco tail with the white lateral borders running the entire length of the tail; it was very distinctive. The bird has not returned so far today so that I might obtain more photos. One of the photos (the only one submitted that was within the size limitations; my fault) taken by my wife, Rebecca, has kindly been posted by David Cahlander at the URL below. Unfortunately this head-on view omits many of the field marks and could be interpreted to be several species. Hopefully the film photos I took will provide some better views. As I get other photos I will post them on the MOU website. http://moumn.org/cgi-bin/recent.pl?op=showcase Thank you, Ken Vail Blooming Prairie -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... [mou] MOU Booth at State Fair
The Executive Board of MOU has decided that the MOU will NOT have a booth this year at the State Fair. We know that some of you were looking forward to working the booth again as you enjoyed it when you did it last. We were not successful in getting anyone or any group to take charge of organizing the event in time to good a good job. We are planning on being back at the fair next year. If you are interested in planning and organizing next year's event, let us know. Tom Bell, Secretary MOU Grey Cloud Island 5868 Pioneer Rd. S.
