I don't know how much of the park you covered, but we found 4 "stray'"
crossbills far south of the larger flock, in evergreens near the group
camp. Given the quantity of cones available there, I wonder if the the
main flock moved down there to feed.

[mou-net] Another Harlequin photo

2009-01-02 Thread
Hi All--The Harlequin Duck showed two interesting feeding behaviors. It
often swam with its bill in the water, almost like it was skimming the
surface. When it dove, it clapped its wings, apparently using them for a
diving stroke. Here is a photo :-)

[mou-net] WW Crossbill at Afton SP in Washington County refound

2009-01-02 Thread Linda Sparling
Singular.  I relocated one White-winged Crossbill this afternoon (Jan. 2) at
about 3:45.  She was teed up on a spruce near a ski shelter east of the line of
red pine and spruce referred to in yesterday's post.  She flew to the south and
I did not see or hear any of her companions.  An easier way to get to this part
of the park is to park on 50th St., east of Cty. 21 at a point where there's a
sign that indicates no parking between dusk and dawn.  Walk around the corner
and up the street (starts with 'Q').  You'll see a gate leading to the park.
The line of conifers visible from the gate is the general area.

Also interesting today were two groups of Eastern Bluebirds (six in each
group).  One group was east of Woodbury Rd. on Dale or 50th St.  The other
group was north of Afton SP on 50th St.

I also participated in the Afton CBC yesterday and found a group of 36 Common
Redpolls in a neighborhood just southwest of Lake Elmo Park.  Take Jasmine as
it winds around to Stonegate Park.  This is where I saw the flock.  There are
lots of birch trees around - the redpolls were feeding on the catkins.

[mou-net] Larsmont/Knife River Hawk Owl

2009-01-02 Thread Jim Lind
I looked for Jan Green's Hawk Owl at about 4:00 this afternoon and
found it about a mile west of where she originally saw the bird. It
was along the Highway 61 expressway at the Salakka Road, but I last
saw it fly inland (north) high overhead and out of sight.

[mou-net] Black Dog Pelicans

Thank you, to all of you who wrote me about the failing Black Dog
pelican; Rob Daves, special thanks for clarifying the situation.
As I suspected, having seen two pelicans still there several weeks
ago, there were two. One died, but the other is still apparently
mobile. If the remaining bird should start looking sickly, I let my
friend know.

Re: [mou-net] [mnbird] American White Pelican at Blackdog

2009-01-02 Thread Rob Daves
Perhaps this will help, Roger and all...

I was at Black Dog Lake mid-afternoon,
but missed the
skiers. Interested sighting, Jim.

However, an apparently "healthy" American White Pelican floating on the little
channel leading from the lake to the east outlet attracted my attention. I say
"healthy" because
unlike the pelican we've been seeing, this one had no compunction about
flying away when several folks on the east shore of the channel got too
near. As I crunched through the snow toward the little point to get a snapshot
of it flying
south, I found a pelican carcass on the ground only a few yards away from
where the healthy pelican had been floating on the channel.

Subject: [mnbird] American White Pelican at Blackdog

Hi everyone -

I have to dispute the report of the pelican at Blackdog having
died. I saw it alive and well at around 3:00 pm on New Year's Day. So
unless there are two pelicans or this one is risen from the dead, it
was doing fine when I saw it. There were several other birders
observing it at the same time.

[mou-net] Hoary Redpoll

2009-01-02 Thread Michael Hendrickson
Just noticed a female Hoary Redpoll at my feeders this morning. I have not
seen this flock of redpolls until this morning so I really do not know if this
sighting is going to be reliable as a every day sighting since different flocks
of birds come and go each day.

Re: [mou-net] Black Dog New Year's Day - I'm not making this up

2009-01-02 Thread sue
No, Linda, the water skier was just doing his New Years Day thing - there were
several of them actually. I saw the Pelican - it has died - it was just south
of the east bridge. I first thought it was sleeping, but from closer it was
clearly gone. Many Swans at Black Dog, as well as crows, red tailed hawk,
starlings, mallards. Surprisingly, no bald eagle at the time I was there,
which was close to noon.
Other New Years birds around the metro were gadwalls and ring neck ducks at
Blue Lake in Shakopee, coot, hoody, black duck, robin and white fronted goose
at Veterans Park in Shakopee. 3 woodpeckers at home - hairy, downy & red-belly.
Surprisingly, no cardinal anywhere and I generally hear/see them at home every
day, and the pine siskins didn't show up either. All in all, 22 species for
New Years Day compared to 12 last year.
