[mou-net] Summer Tanager - Spring Valley, Fillmore Co.

2009-04-22 Thread Carl Greiner
About 6 pm last night I stopped by Ray Pothoff's house in Spring Valley and
while Ray was telling me the Summer Tanager had not been seen all day it
flew in (picture & address on Recently Seen). Cool bird. Thanks a lot Ray.

[mou-net] Red-throated Loon, Stearns Co.

2009-04-22 Thread Chu, Philip
This morning - from 0805 (when I arrived) through 0925 (when I left) - there
was a Red-throated Loon on Sauk Lake, in the town of Sauk Centre. The loon was
in winter plumage, and I suspected it to be less than a year old because of how
weakly red-tinged the iris was.

To get to the spot from which I viewed the loon, take US 71 north through
downtown Sauk Centre. On the north side of downtown, where US 71 bends hard to
the right, turn left on 4th St. N; then take 4th St. N to its end - it
dead-ends at the lakeshore. From here, the loon was sometimes straight
offshore; sometimes as much as 300 yards to the NW; and sometimes as much as
200 yards to the SW.

[mou-net] Bass Ponds and Crosby Farm

2009-04-22 Thread Derek Bakken
Hello,

Decided to celebrate this Earth Day by doing some morning birding.

First stop was Bass Ponds and Old Cedar Bridge where I found most of
the birds to be expected plus some FOYs: Broad-winged Hawk (BP),
White-throated Sparrow (BP), Swamp Sparrow (OCB), and Tree Swallow
(BP) (another pair of birders said they also saw Bank and Cliff
swallows there today).

Then over to Crosby Farm where I again found the usual plus another
Broad-winged Hawk, lots of Ruby-crowned Kinglets, and my FOY Belted
Kingfishers.

I also saw my first real treehugger. She was really passionately
hugging a tree for a few minutes. Only on Earth Day.

On my bike ride to work I saw some Horned Grebes along the north shore
of Lake Harriet (stopped for a few minutes looking for the Sage
Thrasher - I saw a photo on Facebook of the Thrasher that said the
photo was taken on the 19th - I haven't seen a report since the 14th)

[mou-net] Red-Bellied Woodpecker - Duluth

2009-04-22 Thread Michael Hendrickson
Heard a Red-bellied Woodpecker in the Smithville neighborhood which is located
just west of the Duluth Zoo. I actually heard the bird called several times
from my yard which is a new yard bird for me.

[mou-net] SD solo bird count

2009-04-22 Thread Erik Bruhnke
So today with lots of sun and strong southern winds, I decided to put up a
lawn chair in the front yard of the place we're staying at, and get out the
binocs and scope and scan for raptors. I had a very fun time, with a total
of 55 raptors over the course of roughly 4 hours. Two Broad-winged Hawks
flew overhead in a small kettle of Swainson's Hawks, a Sharpie, Cooper's,
and Red-tailed Hawks, totalling a dozen birds in a kettle. What a rush it
is, counting and IDing raptors in kettles!

Here's my totals from the yard today

Red-tailed Hawk - 8 (two dark morph)
Broad-winged Hawk - 2 (my first of the season!)
Turkey Vulture - 2
Swainson's Hawk - 21
Cooper's Hawk - 3
Sharp-shinned Hawk - 2
American Kestrel - 6
Unknown buteo - 6
Unknown Falcon - 3
Unknown raptor - 2

American White Pelican - 80
Double-crested Cormorant - 34
Franklin's Gull - 70

Here's stuff that's within the front yard, or within a block of my house
which I heard/saw today while doing the hawk count...

Mourning Dove
Eurasian Collared Dove
Northern Flicker (most are Yellow-shafted, but we have seen several
red-shafted ones too!)
Hairy Woodpecker
American Crow
American Robin
European Starling
Common Grackle
HARRIS'S SPARROW
RED CROSSBILL
Tomorrow's forecast weather is lots of sun (upper 80's for temp), and strong
south winds. I'll likely be doing this tomorrow :)

Good birding,
Erik Bruhnke
