[mou-net] Byllesby? Looking for shorebirds

2009-05-01 Thread Jacob Hartman
Has anyone been to Byllesby lately? I am looking for shorebirds, as I have
few on my LL. I was especially interested in the Avocets.

Thanks.

[mou-net] Louisiana Waterthrush and shorebird update, Nicollet County

2009-05-01 Thread Bob Dunlap
This afternoon I found a Louisiana Waterthrush at Seven-Mile Creek
County Park in Nicollet County. The bird was foraging along the creek
at the end of the park road just past the parking lot and near the
first bridge. I first heard a sharp "smack" call note; thinking it was
a Northern, I was very surprised to find a Louisiana. I followed the
bird as it worked the edge of the water and eventually flew upstream
and out of sight.

The shorebird spot one mile north of the town of Nicollet on the east
side of Hwy. 111 has a bit more water than the last week due to this
week's rains (~1.5 inches) and thus currently less mudflats are
exposed. Without rain in the next few days this will improve. Today
there were a few shorebirds present however, including Lesser
Yellowlegs, Semipalmated Plover, and a pair of Wilson's Phalarope.

[mou-net] Corcoran - May 1st.

2009-05-01 Thread Andrew Longtin
I still have two Juncos poking around under my feeders and in the bushes in
the front of the house.. Orioles at hitting the jelly hard already.. I
have a Robin in a nest under my deck, need to check that for eggs. I have
had some arguing over my three gourds by the Tree Swallows. This morning I
noticed the male Bluebird sitting on one of my pair of Gilbertson's Bluebird
houses. Multiple White-throated Sparrows seen, also heard singing, still had
at least one Lincoln's Sparrow, and I may have seen my first flying cigar
today!! (Swift) They nest every year in the neighbors chimney!!

Oh ya, stopped to check a nest site on my way home from and errand and
pulled two Wood Ticks off me!

[mou-net] Shorebirds on the move- kandiyohi co.

2009-05-01 Thread Randy Frederickson
In two brief stops Thursday evening in strong wind and fading light, I
counted: 44 Wilson's phalarope, 36 willets, 21 golden plover, 7 dowitcher
sp., 1 hudsonian godwit, and several hundred peeps. Whereas I have been
seeing a "smattering" of dozens of birds, yesterday was 300 plus.
These are the same two locations I posted last week: Olson Lake WPA and the
area just west and north of Pennock.

[mou-net] piping plover Detroit Lakes

2009-05-01 Thread Beau Shroyer
0700 hours. One piping plover on Detroit Lakes City Beach near Lake Ave. and
J&K Marina. dog flushed it from behind a boat on the beach and it made 3 peep
calls and landed 10 feet from me. I saw a pale plover, one neck band, black
line on forehead, white supercilium, black eyes and yellowish legs. I observed
it with binoculars before running home to get my camera. I went back with the
camera, a point and click digital, and approached the bird in the same location
I left it. It started running along the beach giving a pee-loo call. I took
two pictures but they are not good enough to distinguish. It flew south over
the lake calling pee-loo, pee-loo until it was out of sight and ear shot. I
would not be surprised if it is back on the beach by now. I will keep looking
for it today as time allows.

Also on the lake;

200+ horned grebes

400+ D.C. cormorants

A.W. pelicans

bonaparte's gull

r.b. gull

scaup spp.

forster's tern
