This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, May 28,
2009 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

The last wave of migration is coming through, and mornings this week are
noisy with the din of singing birds. This will soon end as the birds get
down to business raising new families. Please be sure to report all
nesting evidence you see, and I encourage you to participate in the
Minnesota Breeding Bird Atlas project by adopting a block to survey.

>From Lake of the Woods County, Dan Williams reported the sighting of two
AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS near the entrance to Zippel Bay State Park, and an
AMERICAN 3-TOED WOODPECKER in Beltrami Island State Forest a half mile
from Gustafson Camp. On May 28, he saw a SHORT-EARED OWL at the
intersection of MN 72 with CR 35, and WESTERN KINGBIRDS were found at
Morris Point on Lake of the Woods. Martin Kehoe reported a SPRUCE GROUSE
at his cabin deep in the Beltrami Island State Forest. Gretchen Mehmel
reported a SCARLET TANAGER coming to the Norris Camp feeders this week.

Beth Siverhus in Roseau County this week saw a COOPER'S HAWK, SORA,
GREATER YELLOWLEGS, SPOTTED SANDPIPER, and RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD in
Warroad.

Larry Wilebski in Kittson County reported SCARLET TANAGER on May 22, and
on May 23, he had 15 warbler species and a PEREGRINE FALCON at his place
near Lancaster. The MOU weekend trip lead by Kim Eckert found an
AMERICAN BLACK DUCK on May 22. At Lake Bronson State Park, they found a
BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER .

Gretchen Mehmel reported that an ORCHARD ORIOLE is hanging out at a home
northeast of Skime in Beltrami County.

On May 21, Ron Erpelding and Herb Dingmann found a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD
along CR 38 in Marshall County at a mailbox numbered 26547. I don't
believe that anyone has re-located that bird. The MOU trip found a
NORTHERN GOSHAWK and a CALIFORNIA GULL at Agassiz NWR on May 23. Neither
has been sighted since. Today, May 28, two NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED
SPARROWS were heard near West Gate within Agassiz NWR. In addition,
twenty warbler species were found during a couple of hours at
Headquarters; also a PHILADELPHIA VIREO, ORCHARD ORIOLE, and a GREAT
HORNED OWL on the nest were seen. On May 24, I found a lone SNOW GOOSE
at the Warren wastewater treatment ponds along with EARED GREBES,
WILSON'S PHALAROPES, and RED-NECKED PHALAROPES.

The MOU group found a HENSLOW'S SPARROW singing a couple of hundred
yards north of CR 3 along the old unpaved Pembina Trail that runs less
than a quarter mile inside Pennington County at that point. On May 23,
they saw a SHORT-EARED OWL along CR 20.

Bruce Flaig in southern Polk County reported an ORCHARD ORIOLE at the
feeder on May 27. The MOU trip found a late ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK just west
of the Pennington County line on May 24.

and a SCARLET TANAGER at Tamarac NWR on May 24.

departed earlier in the week. On May 26, she saw a CANADA WARBLER in the
yard.

Thanks to all who sent in sightings this week.

[mou-net] Need a few Regular Species

2009-05-28 Thread Frank Gosiak
I am missing a few birds from my regular species list for Minnesota. If
anyone can help me find these birds I would appreciate a response.

Cinnamon Teal
Little Blue Heron
Prairie Falcon
Red Knot
Parasitic Jaeger
Saw Whet Owl
White-eyed Vireo
Carolina Wren
Mountain Bluebird
Louisiana Waterthrush
Kentucky Warbler
Hooded Warbler
Yellow-breasted Chat
Summer Tanager
Western Tanager
Smith's Longspur
Chestnut-collared Longspur

It's getting harder to find new birds and I would appreciate any info on
where to look for any of them or if you have seen any of these birds
recently. I have a little time to go chasing so I hope I find something to
chase after. Thanks

[mou-net] Hummingbird Observation, St. Cloud

2009-05-28 Thread Pastor Al Schirmacher
My son, Nate, just called. He observed a hummingbird at Munsinger Gardens
(St. Cloud) this afternoon with purple rather than red under its chin. He
is confident about the coloration due to close viewing (four feet away). In
all other ways the hummer was identical to a male Ruby-throated. This leads
to three obvious questions:

1) Have Ruby-throated been observed with purple throats?

2) Can a Ruby-throated's throat appear purple (he described it as "Viking
purple", curious for a Packer fan:) ) up close for an extended period of
time?

3) What is the possibility of a Black-chinned appearing in the upper Midwest
during spring?

Thanks!

[mou-net] Prothonotary Warbler in Renville Cty

2009-05-28 Thread Bob Ekblad
I located a singing Prothonotary Warbler in Renville County at11:20 am
today. It was in a cty park off of cty 6 just south of cty 15 right
along the river. Take the park road to the west for 0.6 mi, go past
the clearing and enter the woods again. The bird was calling from the
side of the road opposite from the river.

[mou-net] Central MN Migration Observations

2009-05-28 Thread Pastor Al Schirmacher
Now that we're down to migratory trickles and dickcissels, a few personal
observations:

* Observed numbers up this year:

- Blackpolls!

- Wilson's Phalaropes

- Yellow-throated Vireos

- Swainson's Thrushes

- Palm Warblers

- Scarlet Tanagers (everywhere)

- Western Meadowlarks

* Observed numbers down this year:

- American Wigeons

- Double-crested Cormorants

- Broad-winged Hawks

- Blue-headed Vireos

- Hermit Thrushes

- Golden-winged and Blue-winged Warblers (and no hybrids yet in area, unlike
last two years)

- Lincoln's Sparrows

* Still have not seen or heard this year (bird nearly daily):

- Osprey (latest that I can remember not having one, actually several)

- American & Least Bitterns

- Black-billed Cuckoo

- Yellow-bellied Flycatcher

- Whimbrel (So, what else is new? 16 years and counting. Glad that Nathan got
his in Duluth this year.)

- Orchard Orioles

* Warblers were generally 3-7 days later than anticipated. Wood Thrushes were
10 or so days late. Eastern Wood-Pewees were quite late. Mourning Warblers
have been a tougher find. Species diversity about the same as last year,
little down from prior two years.

Good birding to all!
