[mou-net] Warblers in Chisago County
I finally experienced a warbler wave in Wild River State Park the afternoon of August 21, Chisago County. ?In the mixed flock were Golden-winged, Black-and-white, Chestnut-sided (male in non-breeding plumage), and Blue-winged Warblers, American Redstarts and one Ovenbird. ?There were also Yellow-throated and Red-eyed Vireos, a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, and of course the Black-capped Chickadees to announce the wave. ?To get to this part of the park, take County 9 through Sunrise and look for the Ferry Road. ?Drive past the Sunrise Cemetery to the parking area for the boat launch/picnic area. ?Walk back up the road to where the trail crosses the road. ?I went right or West (East takes you immediately across a bridge). ?The woods were quiet until quite a ways in. ?The activity began right around a bed of red granite rocks across the path (well past the bed of mixed rocks). I also saw a Yellow-bellied Flycatcher in Checkerboard Park just North of Hwy. 95 on County 67. The sod farms were largely empty of birds. ?There was an area on 420th, East of Harder Av. with many Killdeer, 3 Lesser and 1 Greater Yellowlegs. [mou-net] Osprey and Peregrine, southeast Minneapolis
This morning I saw an Osprey attempting to fish in a small area of Minnehaha Creek, just west of Hwy. 55/Minnehaha Falls area. I'd never seen one hovering so low in a creek setting, it was pretty neat. Also along Hwy. 55, at 35th Street, was a Peregrine Falcon perched on an old industrial building. [mou-net] Birding about the metro
Northern Harrier, female or juvenile, seen yesterday (Thursday) in Brooklyn Park in the fields at Hwys 169 and 610. A pair of Sandhill Cranes was seen yesterday in Lino Lakes at Birch and Wild Turkey Trail. I also thought I saw another at (65mph) by the Medtronic Hdqts at Hwy 10 just west of 35w. This year has been banner year for the invasive flower Purple Loosestrife, which can be seen when you look at many of the wetlands around town. This beautiful escapee from local gardens turns our productive wetlands into purple sterile wasteland. Even though they are flowering profusely this year, I can see that many are worm-eaten where biological control agents have been introduced. Next year the bugs should cycle to numbers more successful in controlling this weed. On the negative side new invasive are being sold to naive gardeners who do not know to ask if it is native. At least now, my wife asks now before she purchases. I still have invasive plantings to cut out of my yard. The worst: Amur Maple. Sorry to go on more about plants than birds.
