[mou-net] Bloomington Christmas Count Results

2009-12-21 Thread MARK OCHS
The Bloomington Christmas Count tallied 61 species last Saturday; however, I
await results from ten groups, which will likely add to this total.

Highlights were a White-winged Dove in Burnsville (likely a first Minnesota
Christmas Count record); adult Franklin's Gull in near alternate plumage, as
well as multiple Iceland, Thayer's and Glaucous Gulls (all at Black Dog power
plant; Carolina Wren and Swamp Sparrow in Bloomington.

Birds we often see, but missed on the count, include: Great Blue Heron,
Green-winged Teal, Bufflehead, American Coot, Wilson's Snipe, Eastern
Screech-Owl, Snowy Owl, Golden-crowned Kinglet, White-throated Sparrow, all
blackbirds, Snow Bunting and Pine Siskin. Please e-mail me if you observed any
of these species on Saturday.

Thanks.
Mark

[mou-net] snowy owl at airport

2009-12-21 Thread
Hi All--

A friend passing through MSP airport today left a phone message that he
observed a Snowy Owl at MSP airport today. I don't know other details.

Erika and I did not see the Long-tailed Ducks at Prescott today, but we did
see the Harlequin Duck just north of the highway and railroad bridges.

[mou-net] Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Bemidji, Itasca CBC

2009-12-21 Thread Douglas Johnson
There has been a Rose-breasted Grosbeak, adult male, at the Lake Bemidji
State Park entrance station coming to the feeders for about a week. It was
seen on the Bemidji CBC on Saturday by Pat Rice and others and photographed
by Mary Lou Marchand.

On Sunday, the Itasca St. Park CBC was held. Highlights included a record
number of Red-breasted Nuthatches, good numbers of both Red ( many well
photographed by Noel Benson) and White-winged Crossbills, a single Boreal
Chickadee at a feeder on Lake Alice near the Lake Alice Bog SNA, a single
White-throated Sparrow feeding on grit along Clearwater County Rd. #2 at the
Mississippi River Bridge 4 miles north of the park, a few Evening Grosbeaks and
two Black-backed Woodpeckers. Both counts had several mid-day hunting
Barred Owls. A researcher spouse of one participant indicated that small
mammal counts this winter have been a quite low numbers. Also, I have a
third party report of a Great Grey Owl four miles north of Nevis in the Paul
Bunyan St. Forest late last week and another road killed on St. Hi. 64 several
miles south of Nevis.

[mou-net] New Ulm CBC

2009-12-21 Thread Brian & Risa Smith
Hi,

We had 14 field observers and 9 feeder counters on Saturday for the New Ulm
CBC. Overall we had 38 species for the day, which is above averge. Highlights
were: one Bufflehead, one Eastern Screech Owl, 3 Fox Sparrows, American Robins,
one Rough-legged Hawk, 392 Wild Turkey. We had a new species this year, 6
Eurasian Collared-Doves which Molly Tranel found at her home feeder in New Ulm.

And in the "close but no cigar" catergory, we had two near misses. The first
was a juvenile Golden Eagle that Bob Dunlap spotted perched on a dead snag
along the KC Road northwest of New Ulm. We (Bob, Matt Mecklenberg and myself)
got good looks at it and could see the golden feathers on the nape and when it
took flight could see the white tail and black band as well as the white
patches on the primaries. I was a little exasperated to discover later that
the place where we found the Golden Eagle was a mile outside of the count
circle! This would have been a new species for the CBC as well.

Cody Fox, Gary Schneider and Lance Kuester found a diving duck on the Minnesota
river that they were unable to identify to species. It was in an open patch of
water and was about a quarter of a mile away. Cody told me that it was a dark
colored duck and that Lance believed that it was a species of sea duck. Cody
thought that the illustration of a female White-winged Scoter looked the
closest to what he saw.

Re: [mou-net] White-throated Sparrow

2009-12-21 Thread jtanamachi
Pam, On 12/19 during the Christmas Bird Count, my husband Steve and I saw one
in Hillside Cemetary in Minneapolis (near the Quarry Center.) Otherwise,
they've been gone from our yard, about 1 mile away from the Quarry, for a month
or more.

Has anyone else seen a White-throated Sparrow?
I'm in the south Maplewood area of the Twin Cities, sandwiched between St. Paul
and Woodbury.
I saw the first one in my yard on 12/17 and another today 12/21.

[mou-net] Black-headed Grosbeak update

2009-12-21 Thread Kim R Eckert
The Black-headed Grosbeak is still present in Duluth, with
observations at 3 different times this morning between 7:45 and 11:00.
This is now the 4th consecutive day this first-county-record
individual has been present. Before visiting the feeders, please be
sure to follow the guidelines posted on Saturday evening:

- The address is 6219 E Superior St: take Hwy 61 through Duluth to
60th Ave East, turn left and go 2 blocks to Superior St, then turn
right to 6219 (which is located on the inland side of Superior St).

- Please park on Superior St (not in the driveway).
- Because of limited visibility into the backyard (where the feeders
are) and to avoid disturbing the bird, the homeowners have asked that
NO MORE THAN FIVE PERSONS visit at any one time.
- Walk quietly up the driveway, and, before coming to the garage, walk
left to the back door and watch the feeders as you stand quietly on
the sidewalk between the driveway and the back door. Please do not go
any farther up the driveway, or into the backyard, or closer to the
feeders.
- Do not stand and watch by the garage, since this is too close to the
feeders.
- Do not call the homeowners in advance or knock on the door; anyone
is welcome without prior arrangement, again, as long as no more than
5 persons are present at a time.
- The homeowners, Pat and John Thomas, thank you all in advance for
your cooperation! Please feel free to give me a call at 218 349 5953
if you have any questions.

[mou-net] Gray-crowned rosy finch: gone!

2009-12-21 Thread Janet Hill
Hi to everyone who's written about the gray-crowned rosy finch in Aitkin County:

We haven't seen it since December 17th (and not for lack of looking -- it's
sure hard to bake Christmas cookies when there might be a gray-crowned rosy
finch outside). If we see it again we'll be happy to phone anyone nearby who'd
like to come and take a look. It's not looking too likely, but we'll keep
watching for it. Just email me at janet.h...@rocketmail.com with your phone
number. Thanks for all the interest -- this has been very exciting! :-)
