[mou-net] Lake Byllesby Shorebirds ~ Dakota Co.

2010-05-15 Thread Conny Brunell
Late this morning at Lake Byllesby in Dakota County Susan Schumacher and I
observed a spectacular breeding Black-bellied Plover out on the mudflats.
Other shorebirds present were ~ Sanderling, Short-billed Dowitchers, Willet,
Dunlin, Semipalmated Plovers, White-rumped, Least, Pectoral, Solitary, Spotted,
and Semipalmated Sandpipers, Wilson's Phalaropes and both Yellowlegs.

Lake Byllesby

From Randolph and MN. State 56 turn east onto Dakota County 88 (292nd. St.).
Lake Byllesby is on the south side of the highway. In .2 mile there is a
driveway to your right with limited parking and a gate, do not block the gate.
Walk behind the gate, down the hill and look for an opening in the trees
looking east to the mudflats. There is also another access another .2 m east
of here, pull into the Lake Side Cemetery and walk the road to the east and
view the mudflats. A spotting scope would be recommended to see across the
extensive mudflats.

Around noon a Marbled Godwit was observed at the end of the spit on the
northwest
part of White Bear Lake out from Lake and Stewart Avenues. It was still there
when I
left the area after a half hour or so.

Re: [mou-net] Lake Byllesby Shorebirds ~ Dakota Co.

2010-05-15 Thread Jim Mattsson
A reminder that today, May 15, is the date in which they begin raising water
levels to summer pool levels. So get 'em while you can.

Also, yesterday afternoon I searched the lake and found a grand total of ONE
shorebird, a Dunlin. That was it. Honest.

[mou-net] Black Vulture at Stoney Point, Duluth Twp.

2010-05-15 Thread John Green
A little before 5:00 this evening, May 15th, John and I flushed a Black
Vulture from the top of the bank just east of the stone wall at Stoney
Point, Duluth Township. We had a very close but short, less than a
minute, view of it as it circled back to the west over the woods. It
appeared to have been attacked to some garbage that had been dumped down
the clay bluff. Just to show how strange the spring migration can be,
we also had a pair of Evening Grosbeaks at our feeder this afternoon.

[mou-net] mallards mating brown-headed cowbirds hummer

2010-05-15 Thread Forest Strnad
Greetings from the FOREST on the Straight River, Faribault

We've have had a pair of Mallards under our feeder for about two weeks. They
have been absent for a couple of days. Today there was a female and two males
who were ardently persuing and possibly mating.

We also had 5 Brown-headed Cowbirds this AM. This possibly means birds in our
area have cowbird eggs.

This evening at 6:50 I checked my feeders from our kitchen window and was
happily surprised to see a male R-T Hummingbird land on the feeder, which was
just put out this morning.

[mou-net] Snail Lake, Ramsey County Addendum: Pelicans

2010-05-15 Thread Karen Kraco
Can't believe I forgot to mention in my previous post - a small flock of
pelicans this morning at Snail Lake Regional Park - we saw, through the
trees, glimpses of their circling, right about the time the scarlet tanager
appeared... Just those two sightings alone would have made it a good day.

[mou-net] Hooded Warbler ~ Rice Co.

2010-05-15 Thread Dave Bartkey
Hi everyone,
While attempting a big day in Rice County today, Gene Bauer, Dan Tallman and
I found a singing male Hooded Warbler in the east side of Cannon River
Wilderness Park. We all had great looks! This is the third year in a row that I
have seen or heard a Hooded Warbler in this very spot, which is about 100 yards
before the land opens up and you would encounter the boardwalk. This was also
one of 19 warbler species today. We tallied a total of 129 birds - far short of
the record. (143)

  Highlights:
Hooded Warbler
2 Cerulean Warblers
Acadian Flycatcher
Black-billed Cuckoo
Lark Sparrow
Eurasian Collared Dove
2 Western Grebes
2 Red-necked Grebes
Scarlet Tanagers (many)

Oh, and one bird that started off my day in a nice way was a calling Common
Nighthawk above my apt. building at 4:45 am.

Good birding!

[mou-net] Crosby Park Brown Creeper Nest

2010-05-15 Thread Julian Sellers
A Twin Cities Urban Bird Fest group found a Brown Creeper nest this morning in
Crosby Farm Regional Park in St. Paul. We observed a creeper carrying either
nesting material or food (couldn't tell which it was). After we watched it for
a while, the creeper entered a space behind loose bark, completely disappearing
in the cavity. It emerged empty-mouthed shortly thereafter. I have entered it
in the BBA.

[mou-net] Fwd: Cerulean, Bay-breasted Warbler, and Acadian Flycatcher, east side of Rice Cty Cannon River Wilderness Park

Subject: Cerulean, Bay-breasted Warbler, and Acadian Flycatcher, east side of
Rice Cty Cannon River Wilderness Park

Today at the east side of the Rice Cty Cannon River Wilderness area, I was
pleased to join two other birders , Claudia and Judy. We viewed:

Acadian Flycatcher 1 (heard several more)
Cerulean Warbler (good views of 3; more may be present)
 Bay-breasted Warbler 1
The flycatcher was seen after the first bridge, easily heard. The Ceruleans
were singing on and off along the trail for 1/4 mi.

 Also:
 Red-eyed Vireo
 American Redstart (many)
 Tennessee Warbler
 Common Yellowthroat.
 Ovenbird
 Rose-breasted Grosbeak

I later I continued farther down the trail to the short boardwalk and beyond,
where there is a marshy meadow with some low bushes and trees:
 Eastern Towhee
 Yellow Warbler (many)
 Common Yellowthroat (many)
 Yellow-throated Vireo
 Warbling Vireo
 Black-billed Cuckoo (heard)
 Sandhill Crane (heard)
 Red-tailed Hawk
I heard a Wood Thrush on the way back to the car.

Directions: Take Hwy 3 south through Northfield, past Menard's on your
right; turn left (SE) on Hwy 20 and drive about 4 miles. Watch for the
county park entrance pullout and gate, on right (west) side of the road.
There is no road sign marking the park or the pullout, but you'll see a sign
at the gate. There is one main trail, but to continue on the trail to the
meadow, make a left at a Y, and take the trail across the creek bed, which
 will continue to this area.

Re: [mou-net] Western Sandpiper Updates?

2010-05-15 Thread Steve Weston
I stopped by the pond on 320th east of Holyoak at about 5pm saturday. I
found at least nine species of shorebirds (Killdeer, both yellowlegs,
Solitary and Spotted, Baird, Pectoral, Semi-Palmated SP, Least SP, Wilson's
Phalarope) and a probable Western Sandpiper. The sandpiper kept going in
and out of the grass not allowing viewing of the leg color, beak, or flanks.
It did have a rich rust colored back and a rufous ear patch.
