[mou-net] More on the Jaegers
I left Minneapolis this morning at 5:00am in hopes of finding the jaegers that have been reported at Wisconsin Point and when I arrived the birds did not disappoint. The juvenile Pomarine was the first to show up on the scene from the east and later the Long-tailed put on an amazing show. Both of these birds made several passes. There may have been a juvenile Parasitic mixed in as well but the star of the show was the definitive Long-tailed Jaeger (a "lifer" for me). This bird was constantly on the move, chasing and being chased by the Ring-billed Gulls. It came within 30 ft. of the shore in front of our viewing area and later surprised me when I went back to my car by floating 20 ft. above the ground in parking lot #1! There were several other birds of interest in the area including: 1st winter Franklin's Gull- 1 on the water right next to shore Bonaparte's Gull- 7 White-winged Scoter- 1 Common Tern- 15 Semipalmated Plover- 2 Lapland Longspur- 12 Green-winged Teal- several American Wigeon- several Many other birds as well. The show put on by the jaegers along with the other great birds seen today definitely ranks among my best birding experiences. I feel lucky that this region of the Midwest is so productive for an assortment of our feathered friends. [mou-net] Bass Ponds, Bloomington, Hennepin Co. this afternoon
An exercise walk from Bass Ponds to the west ponds at Old Cedar Ave. Bridge turned up, among the regulars: Gadwall, N. Shovelers, Am. Wigeon, Green-winged Teal, and Pie-billed Grebe. The Wigeons were at Old Cedar, the grebes were in the Hogback Pond and the rest were in the first pond on the west (right) side of the Bass Ponds driveway, staying close in to the cattails. [mou-net] Red-throated Loon in Duluth
Adding to all the jaegers and other birds sighted at Wisconsin and Park Points yesterday, a Red-throated Loon was present this morning on the L Superior side of Park Point out from 31st Street. By the way, the presence of all 3 jaegers at Wisconsin Pt yesterday might bring back memories for those of us who have been birding Minnesota for awhile. On the exact same date 30 years ago (October 15, 1980), all 3 jaegers were observed at Park Point, along with a Red Phalarope, Harlequin Duck, and all 3 scoters! If you happen to have some back issues of The Loon, see "Beware the Ides of October" in the Winter 1980 issue (52:143-145). [mou-net] Yellow-throated Vireo and Roberts' Birds of MN
Hi All-- Somewhat belatedly, I posted a photo of a Yellow-throated Vireo I banded on 10/10/10. This is a relatively late date for the species. I also included a couple of links if you are interested in picking up copies of Roberts' two-volume, 1936 classic Birds of Minnesota. One copy is autographed.
