[mou-net] Lyon County - Marshall unusual obs.

2010-11-21 Thread Roger Schroeder
Crazy bird day at home today. Red-shafted Flicker flew in for a few
moments. It flew, and when I went to look for it I observed a
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, and Down Woodpecker in another tree. A while
later, Eurasian Collared-Dove, and Mourning Dove were both seen. Not long
after, a lone Chipping Sparrow mixed with the resident House Sparrows. Also
unusual for our residence were 4 Cardinals (2 pair). I asked my wife if its
like this every day (when I'm at work). She said, "I better not tell you...
you might not ever go to work again".

[mou-net] Townsend's Solitaire Vadnais Lake not found

2010-11-21 Thread Jason Caddy
I looked for the Townsend's Solitaire today around 10:00am-12:15pm with no
luck. It was by no means a waste of time because there was a lot of other birds
on the lakes. The cedars did have groups of Cedar Waxwings eating berries but I
could not pick out the solitaire. All of the other birds in the area were very
active and fun to watch. Here are some of the other birds present:
Gadwall- 2
Canvasback- several
Common Goldeneye- several
Ring-necked Duck- several hundred
Hooded Merganser- over 100 I observed many with fish in their bills.
Bald Eagle- 1 juvenile
Red-winged Blackbird- 1
Common Loon- 2 Foraging together and one of them called.
Trumpeter Swan- 12 I'm assuming that they were this species. The bill on the
juvenile birds had a black base.
American Coot- 1

[mou-net] Black-legged Kittiwake and White-eyed Vireo in Lac qui Parle County.

2010-11-21 Thread Bill Unzen
The White-eyed Vireo found yesterday by Herb Dingmann was still present in
the cedars at the same location at 1:15 this afternoon.

I found an immature Black-legged Kittiwake at the Big Stone NWR at 3:15PM
today. The bird was on the east reservoir among the tree stumps near the
Hwy75 dam. It was still present when I left about half hour later.

[mou-net] Minn Birding Weekends update

2010-11-21 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
The Minnesota Birding Weeks & Weekends (MBW) schedule for the 2011-12
season has been posted on the MBWbirds.com website as of this morning,
Nov 21, with the opening of registrations tomorrow, Nov 22. (Some
registrations have already been received since Nov 15, the previously
announced date in the MOU newsletter; these will be considered as Nov
22 registrations.) This is MBW's 26th season in association with the
Minnesota Ornithologists' Union: we started back in 1986 under the
name of MOU Birding Weekends.

Please note there are 2 changes in the original schedule. The
Washington-British Colombia MBWeek is now September 17-25, 2011, to
match up with the recently posted Westport Seabirds pelagic trip
schedule. And, since these dates now conflict with the September
23-24-25 MBWeekend based in Duluth, that MBW has been canceled.

Also note there are still vacancies on 2 MBWs which are part of the
2010-11 schedule: the Jan 8-9, 2011 MBWeekend in Duluth, and the Feb
19-27, 2011 MBWeek in South Texas.

Complete descriptions, previous summaries, and registration
information for all MBWs can be found at http://mbwbirds.com.

Re: [mou-net] Chipping Sparrow still in backyard (Hennepin County)

2010-11-21 Thread Paul Budde
" Does anybody know what the latest a Chipping Sparrow has ever been seen in
the metro area or MN in general?"

The median south departure date for Chipping Sparrow is November 10th -
meaning that in half the years none are reported after this date and in half
the years one or more are reported.

We have a number of December and January records south - most recently in 8
of the last 15 winters.

Let's see how long this bird sticks around!

Subject: [mou-net] Chipping Sparrow still in backyard (Hennepin County)

We have relocated the Chipping Sparrow eating seed in our backyard this
afternoon. Not sure that it is the same one that we had in our backyard
last week, but it doesn't seem like there would be a whole lot of other
Chipping Sparrows around at this point.

At this point, it seems like it is getting extremely late in the year to see
any Chipping Sparrow in MN.

Does anybody know what the latest a Chipping Sparrow has ever been seen in
the metro area or MN in general?

Woodpecker at our feeder.
