This is the Duluth Birding Report for November 27th, 2010 sponsored by
the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Karl Bardon found a juvenile PACIFIC LOON on the 26th on the lake side
of the Park Point Recreation Area. Karl also found an adult CALIFORNIA
GULL on the 23rd on the Minnesota side of the Superior Entry. This is
apparently a different individual than the one found earlier in the
month at the same location. Peder Svingen saw four THAYER'S GULLS and a
GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL on the 21st at Canal Park in Duluth. Frank
Berdan saw seven WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS on the 25th on Lake Superior at
9402 Congdon Drive. Jan and Larry Kraemer saw a flock of 15 BOHEMIAN
WAXWINGS on the 21st at Page Street and Foster Avenue in Duluth Heights.

A SPRUCE GROUSE was found on the 21st by Sparky Stensaas along Lake
County Road 2, 3.5 miles north of Greenwood Creek. Sparky also reported
that neither the Stony River Forest Road nor the Whyte Road were plowed.

Jeremy Ridlbauer reported a LONG-EARED OWL west of Grand Marais on the
22nd near the intersection of CR 42 and CR 44, off CR 7. Warren Nelson
saw a GREAT GRAY OWL in Aitkin County on the 23rd along CR 18, 0.4 mile
west of the Pietz's Road (320th Lane).

The next scheduled update of this report will be on Thursday, December
2nd.

The telephone number of the Duluth Rare Bird Alert is 218-834-2858.
Information about bird sightings may be left following the recorded
message.

I have observed an adult eating from my suit feeder in St. Paul and there have
been two common ground
doves ground feeding below my feeders. Are these sightings unusual for late
November? I have photos. Bill- Original Message -

[mou-net] hybrid ducks in Duluth

2010-11-27 Thread Karl Bardon
Early this morning I found a pristine adult male Common Goldeneye X Hooded
Merganser hybrid among 460 Common Goldeneye at Canal Park in Duluth, and then
this evening while birding with Peder Svingen at the same location, he spotted
an adult male Common Goldeneye X Barrow's Goldeneye. Individuals of these
two hybrid combinations were seen at this location last winter with the
wintering goldeneyes, but the two birds found today appear to be different
individuals than seen last year. We are hoping to obtain some photos. Although
the Common X Barrow's is fairly subtle, the Common Goldeneye X Hooded Merganser
is a fancy looking bird and worth a look!

[mou-net] eagles

After replenishing the carp piles Friday, as many as 8 adult and
subadult Bald Eagles were present today.
One and a half miles west of Beauford north side of BE Cty 10. The

[mou-net] Brownsville Waterfowl Today

2010-11-27 Thread Refsnider
Based on the replies I received to my recent requests for Brownsville
swan information, we decided to make a trip down there today
(Saturday). We were somewhat disappointed, because we saw far fewer
tundra swans than in some recent years, but happy that we got to see and
hear well over 1000 of them from the first (new) overlook south of
Brownsville. Unfortunately, the backwaters are freezing up, so no
swans, and few other waterfowl, were close to the overlook. Most swans
were several hundred yards away, as were most of the ducks, so a scope
is almost a necessity for duck ID.

Other waterfowl of interest that we could identify from the overlook(s):

ring-necked ducks
scaup
common goldeneye - dozens
pintails - several dozen, but none close to the overlook
buffleheads - a few, all far out, but some identifiable with binoculars
hooded mergansers - dozens, some fairly close
Am. wigeon - 6-8, mostly at the second (old) overlook, farther south
black duck - 1

We didn't see any redheads, canvassbacks, shovelers, or ruddies. Saw a
couple possible gadwalls, but at too great a distance. And no pelicans.

We saw lots of bald eagles, mostly subadults. We made no attempt to
count them, but they seemed to be on every island and bar, often in
groups. We probably saw well over 100 between the new overlook and the
lower end of Pool 8.

Just in case anyone's interested in this, a Ross's Gull was found this

The Denver Ross's Gull was also still present this morning as well.

That makes two Ross's Gulls within a week of each other! Might want to
  double-check all Bonaparte's Gulls...
