[mou-net] Death of Arden Aanestad
The August 30 Star Tribune had an obit for Arden Aanestad of Edina. A long time MOU member, he was the 2007 winner of the T.S. Roberts award of the MOU, one of many awards he received for his lifetime of work in birding and conservation. Personally, I have fond memories of sitting with him at MOU Paper Sessions and working together at the State Fair booth. Each year at the MOU Paper Session I give a report of birders who died during the past year. Please let me know if you have information on deceased birders. The report is not restricted to MOU members. Manley Olson Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
[mou-net] Grant Cty Ottawa Impoundment - Prairie Falcon

[mou-net] Grant Cty Ottawa impoundment - Prairie Falcon
Try again. I spotted a Prairie Falcon at the North Ottawa Impoundment in Grant Cty along the border with Traverse Cty. I was on the dead end road that enters the middle of the area from the west side. I first saw the bird flying and easily identified it as a falcon but the bird flew over by me and landed in a dead tree (only one out there). When it landed it was facing me and gave a great view of the black underwing linings. Also seen have been several imm Black-crowned Night-Herons, a couple of American Avocets, an Eared Grebe and lots of shorebirds (not the quantity or the number of species I was expecting - but fun nonetheless- mostly yellowlegs and peeps). No Snowy Egret but lots of Great Egrets. PS - I hate typing with fat fingers. [mou-net] Collared Dove
In Mapleton: The Eurasian Collared Dove's regular perch on St. John's Lutheran steeple was usurped by a Sharp-shinned Hawk this morning. The dove took up residence on St. Theresa's Catholic next door. Conversion possible? [mou-net] Nights Hawks
Yesterday, 8/29, in SE Saint Louis Park I observed 4 - 6 common nighthawks foraging and kettling, possibly in migration, from my back deck. They finally disappeared into the cirrus clouds. Chimney swifts were also foraging at what appeared to be a fairly high altitude. I have also observe a olive-sided flycatcher foraging from atop a dying spruce tree.
