[mou-net] new hook to prevent seabird and turtle bycatch

2011-11-15 Thread G Andersson
A tuna fisherman has developed a hook shield to prevent sea turtles and
birds from being hooked by tuna long lines, that can include 1000's of hooks
each. One piece of good news for conservation-if the hooks will be used. .

[mou-net] NO snowy owl, laura lake, cass county

2011-11-15 Thread deanne.endri...@juno.com
My husband and I went to the spot about 12:30pm and there was no sign of the
snowy owl. It is definitely habitat where you could probably see a snowy, but
it's also excellent habitat for short-eared owls.

I did see a FOY flock of common redpolls and a bald eagle perched across the
lake.

[mou-net] MOU and MOU-net

2011-11-15 Thread kess0010
Have you seen a bird because you first learned of where to look by reading
about it on MOU-net? If so, I’m guessing that this listservice is
something you value. It’s an important tool providing the opportunity to
communicate with other birders and to learn about what birds are being seen
in what locations.

MOU-net is provided for you by the Minnesota Ornithologists’ Union (MOU),
as a service to Minnesotans who are interested in birds. The MOU also
maintains a web site where you can view images of birds, and learn where
and when particular species have been seen over the years. In addition, the
MOU conducts birding field trips, teaches young people about birds,
advocates for bird conservation, and supports research on birds, among many
other activities.

Please do your part to support the organization providing the service that
makes it easier for you to see the birds you want to see. Wednesday,
November 16, is Give to the Max Day, a day on which thousands of
Minnesotans will go online to donate to the Minnesota non-profits of their
choice. Please visit www.givemn.org and enter MOU in the search box in the
upper right hand corner of the screen. You’ll be able to make a donation
that will help the MOU to continue serving the birds and birders of
Minnesota.

Thank you in advance for doing your share to support the MOU and MOU-net.

Ann Kessen
MOU President

[mou-net] Sherburne NWR birds - redpoll question

2011-11-15 Thread Betsy Beneke
Several rusty blackbirds still present this morning, around the HQ.  Two common
redpolls stopped by for about one minute, and then left.  Hope they come back
and bring friends!

Reminiscing just a bit about redpolls - all those years that I worked at
Tamarac NWR in Becker County - from 1986 to 2002 - and birded in the northwest,
the redpolls could be counted on to erupt every other year.  One year we'd see
none, the next year they'd be all over the place.  That scenario went on for a
long, long time - but doesn't seem to be the case any more.  So, what happened
to change it?
