[mou-net] Hubbard Co. Shorebirds

2012-05-18 Thread Doug Kieser
A nice variety of shorebirds were observed late yesterday (5/17) on the
mudflats on the north end of Upper Twin Lake in extreme southern Hubbard County.
Species included 1 Hudsonian Godwit, 3 Black-bellied Plovers, 12 Short-billed
Dowitchers, plus Wilson's Phalaropes, Semipalmated Plovers, Least Sandpipers,
etc.
We observed these birds from the end of a two-track road that goes east from
Upper Twin Lake Road. Scopes are required. Also present was a small flock of
Caspian Terns.

[mou-net] Hooded Warbler at Krueger Park Wabasha County

2012-05-18 Thread Scott Mehus
I was at Krueger Park from 7:45-9:05 am today and was able to relocate the
male Hooded Warbler that Andy Nyhus reported yesterday. His directions
were right to the T. The bird would actively signing for about 20
minutes and then be quite for about 20 minutes. It was very hard to
observe the bird though in the heavy cover of this ravine. The bridge area
seems to be the back side of it's territory as he would work his way to the
North East while signing and then the song would become fairly faint. So
be patient and eventually he works his way towards the bridge along the
trail.
Krueger Park is a great park to bird, there are lots of trails to explore!

[mou-net] Inquiry

2012-05-18 Thread Al Schirmacher
Two days left of birding vacation, the two optional days depending upon
reports.

Not many reports.

So, where in MN would you go? Have covered Aitkin, Mille Lacs, Sherburne
pretty thoroughly this week (164 species), and Big Stone/Lac Qui Parle last
week.

Any southern/south central spots of interest? How's Duluth currently? Twin
Cities?

At 24 warblers 22 shorebirds for year, both could be enhanced. Or regional
specialties/one day wonders (eg, Whimbrel) also of interest.

Thanks!
