[mou-net] Western Kingbirds location

2012-06-02 Thread Thomas P. Malone
Recently Joe Conley (I think) posted a note concerning the locale of Western
Kingbirds at Armstrong in the City of Ramsey.

I seem to have somehow lost the note. Can anybody send it (or the directions)
to me? Thank you in advance.

Regards,

Tom

[mou-net] Carver County

2012-06-02 Thread John Cyrus
The daily turnover of good numbers(for this area) of shorebirds continues in
Carver County. I have never birded so consistently for shorebirds during the
spring season, so this may not be that abnormal.Though the amount of
suitable shorebird habitat(still quite a few flooded fields though some have
dried to mud) at this time of year is abnormal. It should only be a couple
weeks til the first shorebirds(Least Sandpiper) begin to head south.

[mou-net] Afton State Park Today

2012-06-02 Thread Julian Sellers
I led a St. Paul Audubon Birding By Ear field trip to Afton State Park this
morning, having scouted it yesterday morning. I think THE Hooded Warbler has
moved. Yesterday, at 9:00 and again at 11:30, it was singing constantly (the
primary song) at the first main overlook north of the big terminal parking lot.
Today, we did not hear it there—either on our way out or on our way in—but we
did hear a HOWA singing the same song almost a mile north, in the northeastern
corner of the park. We took the North River Trail (along the St. Croix), then
the left turn and switchback that goes up a long hill to the northern boundary
of the park. We first heard the HOWA as we approached the bend to the east,
then found it singing near the trail’s bend at the park border. (We did not
see it.) On the trail maps, the mileage indicator 0.6 is printed near this
location.

Yesterday and today we did not hear any Prothonotary Warblers in the promising
area of flooded silver maples where Trout Brook flows under the trail bridge,
but yesterday I SAW two Prothonotaries (or maybe one) there. One of them had a
caterpillar in its beak, and it flew toward the outer silver maples.

A Henslow’s Sparrow is singing on territory close to the trail between the two
“prairie loops” in the north-central part of the park. On the map, there is a
trail junction with symbols for a shelter and a toilet. From this junction, go
west on the trail segment that is 0.2 miles long. You will probably hear the
HESP as soon as you leave that junction. It is on the right (north) side of
the trail, near the first pole with a blue diamond marker. Several sedge wrens
are also in the area. Other grassland birds are scarce in this area, with a
few very distant Bobolinks and Eastern Meadowlarks.

[mou-net] great gray, etc.

2012-06-02 Thread Brad Bolduan
Thursday evening there was a Great Gray prrched on a powerpole next to MN 72
7 miles north of Kelliher. I believe there were reports of this species
posted in that area earlier, this maybe the same bird.

A couple hours before I encountered a Spruce Grouse on the Rapid River Road
not far from Oaks Corner in Beltrami Island State Forest. I encountered one
near the same location last year.

I spent a day in the Bog and encountered all the generally sought after and
expected boreal species except Black Backed Woodpecker, incldung being
scolded by a pair of Boreal Chickadees.

[mou-net] Western Kingbirds location

2012-06-02 Thread Joe Conley
And on way to Sherburne, checked for Western Kingbirds in Ramsey, Mn.
Found a pair where they were last year, Between Ramsey Blvd.-CR 56 and
Armstong Blvd.-CR 83 on US Hwy 10, southside of highway. 5-26-12

Heading North on US Hwy 10 go past Ramsey Blvd -CR 56.
Just past Cor sign is a blue sign for future Ramsey Northstar Train station.
I parked in this driveway and looked directly across highway.
The Western Kingbirds were in the two trees standing alone.
There is a bar closed down on south side of highway with large empty
parking lot. Just north of that place are paved walking paths around a
couple small ponds. Last year I parked there and saw Western Kingbirds up
close hunting. Also saw orchard orioles and grasshopper sparrows there last
year. Watch telephone lines for any bird hawking bugs with yellow.
Good Luck. Joe Conley

[mou-net] Western Kingbird, Ramsey, Anoka County

2012-06-02 Thread Erika Sitz
Early afternoon today we saw a Western Kingbird in the location Joe Conley
posted earlier, on US10 between Ramsey Blvd and Armstrong Blvd across from
the site of the new NorthStar station. We saw it on the wire on the south
side of the hwy, then watched it fly across and sit on a yellow post in the
construction area, then it flew toward the north toward the Ramsey City
Hall. Yesterday morning I saw it on the wire and then it flew into the same
tree on the south side of US10 where we found the nest last year.

That's a good guess, but it was actually in a sumac/honeysuckle
thicket at approximately the location of the green arrow marker here:
http://goo.gl/maps/evFK (assuming I read the satellite view
correctly). There's a easy-to-overlook side path that goes down a
little gully and then up to the top of a grassy hill. There were also
several singing Vesper and Clay-colored sparrows up there (and about
25 brown thrashers, or so it seemed).

Here's a recording of the Bell's from this morning:
