[mou-net] L. Bittern, S. Thrushes (Hennepin Co.)--8/13

2012-08-16 Thread Alyssa DeRubeis
Sorry for the late report: This past Monday, Craig Mandel's MRVAC birding
group briefly observed a LEAST BITTERN off of the Old Cedar Avenue Bridge
observation dock. It flew out of the reeds for a few seconds before ducking
back into the cattails, never to be seen again. A probable WILLOW
FLYCATCHER was heard giving the wit call near the dock. 2 SWAINSON'S
THRUSH were seen from the parking lot as well.

The group also got great looks at MARSH WREN, SORA (~3-4 birds), and
VIRGINIA RAIL (1-2 birds).

Good birding,

Alyssa DeRubeis
now back in Wisconsin again

[mou-net] Carver County

2012-08-16 Thread John Cyrus
It appears that the majority of the shorebirds that had been near New Germany
left the area over the past day or two with yesterday's frontal passage.
Today I counted 6 Lesser Yellowlegs, 1 Spotted, 2 Semipalmated, 15 Least, and 2
Pectoral Sandpiper. I did notice a few unidentified shorebirds here and there
but not that many. After finding a Red-headed Woodpecker in that same area a
couple months ago, I had failed to see any there over the summer despite
repeated attempts to find one. Today, though, there were 2 Red-headed
Woodpecker in plain view on a dead tree. Warblers this morning at Rapids Lake
MVNWR included 2 Blue-winged, 1 Black-and-white(immature), 1 Tennessee, 2-3
Nashville, 3 Common Yellowthroat, 18 American Redstart, 4-5 Magnolia, 2 Yellow,
1 Chestnut-sided, and 2 Canada(male and female). There was also a Black-billed
Cuckoo at the unit.

This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, August 16,
2012 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

Southbound migration appears to be well underway, early though it seems.
The latest cool nights have us wondering if fall weather will set in
early as spring did. We hope that the cold weather won't also come
early. Already a few trees are showing a bit of yellow, and we are
getting reports of bird species that we haven't really seen all summer.

From Agassiz NWR in Marshall County, Lynda Knutsen reported that on
August 13, a pair of TRUMPETER SWANS with five cygnets were seen at Dahl
Pool in the interior of the refuge.

Here at our house east of Thief River Falls in Pennington County , on
August 11, a BROWN CREEPER was seen creeping up a tree trunk, and a
RED-EYED VIREO was singing loudly in the yard. On August 15 a group of
about fifteen DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS were seen flying over the city.
One or two RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS continue to visit our feeder, and
the young BALTIMORE ORIOLES and YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS are cleaning
me out of grape jelly several times a week.

In East Grand Forks, Polk County, Russ Wilbur observed three juvenile
RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS in the greenway on August 10. At Rydell NWR he
saw a pair of TRUMPETER SWANS, three RED-NECKED GREBES, and a GREAT BLUE
HERON. Sandy Aubol reported RED-EYED VIREO, NASHVILLE WARBLER, WILSON'S
WARBLER, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, YELLOW WARBLER, WHITE-THROATED
SPARROW, BALTIMORE ORIOLE, and ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK in her yard on
August 13. A RED-TAILED HAWK was perched on a neighbor's roof. More
warblers were seen on August 15 including CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER,
BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, TENNESSEE WARBLER, and AMERICAN REDSTART.

Marshall Howe in Dorset ,in Hubbard County on August 14, observed
RED-EYED VIREO, and YELLOW-THROATED VIREO. The following warblers were
also seen: COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, AMERICAN
REDSTART, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, ORANGE-CROWNED
WARBLER, and TENNESSEE WARBLER.

Thanks to Lynda Knutsen, Marshall Howe, Russ Wilbur, and Sandy Aubol for
their reports.

Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than
Thursday each week, at ajjop...@mncable.net OR call the Detroit Lakes
Chamber's toll free number: 1-800-542-3992. Detroit Lakes area birders
please call 847-9202. Please include the county where the sighting took
place. The next scheduled update of this report is Thursday,August 23,
2012.

[mou-net] Red Crossbills Sherburne NWR

2012-08-16 Thread Robin LaFortune
Birding yesterday at Sherburne NWR, I heard and saw 2 Red Crossbills. It
sounded like there were more but it was hard to see through the spruces.
Observed in the evergreen section of the Blue Hill Trail.

Before I got to the evergreen area, I found a pair of Scarlet Tanagers- the
male was an orange variant! Surprising to see- I thought it was an oriole at
first.

I also looked for gallinules and chats Saw several juvenile and 1 adult
Common Gallinule but no chat. Had a GREAT look at a Least Bittern that landed
right by me as I stood quietly watching the gallinules. A very enjoyable day.
