[mou-net] Great Black-backed Gull -Duluth Canal Park
We were at canal park in Duluth from about 12:30 to 1:10 and observed two Great Black-backed gulls and one adult and another next to it that looked nearly like the adult but the black was not quite as solid looking on the back. I got pictures I will upload later to make sure they are GBBG's. Ben Harste Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

[mou-net] [mou-rba] MOU RBA 26 November 2012
-RBA *Minnesota *Minnesota Statewide *November 26, 2012 *MNST1211.26 -Birds mentioned Brant Harlequin Duck Long-tailed Duck Pacific Loon Dunlin Little Gull Great Black-backed Gull Snowy Owl Carolina Wren -Transcript Hotline: Minnesota Statewide Date: November 26, 2012 Sponsor: Minnesota Ornithologists' Union (MOU) http://moumn.org Reports: (763) 780-8890 Compiler: Anthony Hertzel (r...@moumn.org) This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Sunday November 25th, 2012. Shawn Zierman found a BRANT on the 20th feeding on the ballfields at Park Point in Duluth. Though not seen recently, the bird may still be in the area, associating with a group of Canada Geese. A HARLEQUIN DUCK was at the far end of Park Point on the 21st, and two GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS were at Canal Park on the 25th. I have a secondhand report of a LITTLE GULL seen with a flock of 50 Bonaparte's Gulls on November 19th at Tamarack Point Campground in Cass County. This is near Lake Winnibigoshish. At least one and as many as three PACIFIC LOONS have been reported from the south shore of Lake Waconia in Carver County. In Wright County, an immature LONG-TAILED DUCK was on Maple Lake on the 25th, seen from the beach on state highway 55. A SNOWY OWL was reported on the 20th from the north end of Hamden Slough NWR. It was perched on a power pole along Becker County Road 13 about two and a quarter miles south of county road 14. Two Snowys were in Marshall County on the 21st, north and west of the town of Argyle at 320th Street and 400th Avenue. On the 18th, Brian Smith found a fairly late DUNLIN at the Sleepy Eye wastewater treatment ponds in Brown County. And on the 23rd, Paul and JoAnn Gunderson reported a CAROLINA WREN at their suet feeder in Big Lake Township, Sherburne County. Another was at Carpenter Nature Center in Washington County on the 19th, at the northern end of the River Trail. The next scheduled update of this tape is Thursday November 29th, 2012. [mou-net] Catharus thrush - Hermit? Duluth, MN
Today while removing snow from the lakewalk I flushed and observed a thrush along the edge of the path. I did not get good enough looks (no binoculars!) to identify the bird but it stayed in the area as I passed by with the snow sweeper broom. The bird is likely a Hermit thrush, but the tail seemed a browncolor that matched the birds back. Not the red-brown of a Hermit Thrush. The location was along the lakewalk in Duluth, MN between Lief Erikson Park and Fitgers. There is a small hill with several mountain ash trees with berries and a brushy hillside along the lake between the park and first buildings above the RR tracks. If anyone is in the area keep a lookout and let me know what it is. [mou-net] Pine Grosbeaks Bohemian Waxwings - Chisago to Morrison
I was searching for Pine Grosbeaks in several counties today, starting in Chisago and heading west. I found them in a couple of places in Chisago - one bird about a mile south of North Branch a block east of Forest Blvd (CR30) on 382nd St and just around the bend on Clara Ave, and a pair of birds about a mile from the Isanti border just north of MN95 (just east of Cambridge) on N Pine Lake Rd about a half mile east of Bennette Ave (north side of road). I wasn't able to find any in Isanti County until I checked out Braham where Denny Martin had reported finding them yesterday (database entry). I only found about 8 birds in the west side of town just south of the Elementary School ( HS) on Southview to 10th street. The flock was not visible until I drove into the 10th St cul-de-sac and found them in a crabapple on the north side of the loop. While I was searching for them I was up on the county line with Kanabec (Isanti CR4 - which is also Isanti 6th Street NW and also Kanabec 421st Avenue NW) and a large flock of them flew over and into Kanabec County. I followed them north on Quail Street and found them in a crabapple on the west side of the road (fire #1047). I also spotted one Pine Grosbeak in the same tree. I found about a dozen Pine Grosbeaks in Milaca in Mille Lacs County at the intersection of 6th St 2nd Ave. On the border of Mille Lacs and Benton Counties I was able to re-find a flock about a mile and a half south of MN23 that had been previously reported by Milton Blomberg. They were moving back and forth across the road. Another re-find was a small group of Pine Grosbeaks that Denny Martin reported at a farm place along Morrison CR26 just to the east of 360th Ave (~1-1/2 mile W of CR33 and a mile N of Benton County in the southeastern corner of Morrison). [mou-net] Pacific Loon, goldeneyes- Park Point
While birding the Park Point recreation area in Duluth this evening, Jane Hosking and I attempted to count the large number of Common Goldeneyes which have been staging on the bay side of the point for the last several weeks, and came up with a grand total of 1859, the highest count I am aware of for Duluth. Also with the goldeneyes tonight were single Black and White-winged Scoters, 4 Buffleheads, and 17 Redheads. On the lake side of Park Point from the dune bridge near Skyharbor airport, a Pacific Loon was also seen. This is probably the same bird which has been present along Park Point for the last few weeks. Once the bay freezes, many of the goldeneyes will hopefully move into Canal Park to forage, where they can be studied at much closer range. Although the male Barrow's Goldeneye which had been seen in Duluth the last four winters has not been reported, the hybrid male Hooded Merganser x Common Goldeneye which wintered here last year was seen at Park Point on 25 November 2012 by Jane Hosking, Andrew Longtin, and myself.
