[mou-net] Boreal Owl & Northern Hawk Owl from today
While out today along the North Shore of Lake Superior as well as birding in Sax-Zim Bog, a push of mid-winter specialties continues provide great looks. The two birders I was guiding around today were thrilled to see their lifer Boreal Owl! Hoary Redpolls and Pine Grosbeaks continue to be seen regularly throughout most of the Sax-Zim Bog feeders, and the Admiral Road birdfeeders have the Boreal Chickadees returning on a regular basis. One Northern Shrike was seen in Sax-Zim Bog today by my group. Hoary Redpolls and Pine Grosbeaks continue to be seen regularly throughout most of the Sax-Zim Bog feeders, and the Admiral Road birdfeeders have the Boreal Chickadees returning on a regular basis. There is a beautiful snowstorm on the way, but it sounds like roads could be iffy! [mou-net] Northshore Owls
I took my 14 year old daughter birding today and she got two lifers. A Boreal Owl just South of the North entrance to Stoney Point road on scenic 61 and a Great Grey Owl on Homestead Road about a mile North of regular Hwy 61, on the left side of the road. We also ran into a large flock of Bohemian Waxwings along Hwy 61 closer to Duluth. My daughter needs a Sawhet (and a Barn Owl) to complete her Minnesota Owl list. Its nice she is showing interest in other things than that which seems common for most young people her age. [mou-net] King Eider, St. Louis Co.
This afternoon (Sat. Feb. 9) from 3:15-3:45 p.m. Susan Fall and I watched an immature male King Eider in Lake Superior about 1/2 mile NE of the Lakewood Pumping Station, Duluth (Lakewood Rd. and Scenic 61). It was diving frequently, and was associating closely with 3 Common Goldeneyes and 1 Red-breasted Merganser. At 3:45 the ducks were flushed by an eagle, and all flew off to the SW toward Brighton Beach. We were unable to relocate the eider. There was very little open water SW of where we found the bird, so we don't know where it went. Parker Backstrom and his wife joined us just in time to see the flock fly. [mou-net] Great Grey Owl/others in St. Louis County
Saw a Great Grey Owl hunting about 3-3:30 PM this afternoon on Lismore Road just west of Ryan. He was sitting on a 12 foot snag just off the shoulder of the road working an open field. Saw him go down in the nearly foot deep snow and nail a mouse or vole with his claws while looked around the field. Then he buried his head in the snow and came up with the critter after a few seconds. Also has Red-Breasted Mergs at McQuade Harbor and had a Drake Hooded Merg at the WLSSD at 27th in Duluth. [mou-net] Duluth-area owl updates
Some brief information from yesterday on a few owls that I don't think has been posted on mou-net…. - The continuing N Hawk Owl on Martin Rd in Duluth was relocated, ranging in the open area between 0.8 and 1.1 mile W of Jean Duluth Rd. This owl's location is sometimes given as only a quarter mile W of Jean Duluth, which is heavily wooded on both sides of Martin Rd (not typical hawk owl habitat). - Two Snowy Owl were present in late afternoon in Superior WI: one along Tower Ave just W of the municipal airport (as others have posted); and another along 28th St near the RR crossing just E of the high school and W of Hill Ave (this owl has apparently been present for several weeks, but I don't think it has been reported on mou-net). We did not check the Snowy Owl site by the Calumet refinery along Hill Ave, because there is no shoulder along this road and maybe only one place to park at a gate (which may attract the attention of a no-nonsense security guard). As far as I know, there have been no Snowy Owls reported in MN in the Duluth-Two Harbors area since December. - And what may be a new Great Gray Owl was seen by Bob Russell and others along Lake County Rd 2, 9.8 mile N of Two Harbors (presumably measured from Hwy 61).
