[mou-net] Sherburne birds classroom bldg.
There was a nice collection of birds seen on Saturday by our bird tour group, and a few more on Sunday. A common gallinule was seen and heard calling early on Sunday morning from the traditional spot on Big Bluestem Pool. A Henslow's sparrow was near the beginning of the Prairie Trail on the Prairie's Edge Wildlife Drive. A pine warbler was singing from pines just off CR 15, on the SE corner of the refuge. And a lark sparrow was found singing on territory between the church and the cemetery on the Orrock Town Hall Road. (From Orrock, go east on CR 4 just a short distance and turn north on the Town Hall Road. Go to the end of the road, which is by the cemetery). Common nighthawks were migrating on Sunday evening - hawking insects over Stickney Pool. I also saw a flock of nighthawks over the refuge last Thursday. And one item, not about birds... I'm over the top excited to tell you that we are going to be building a classroom building at Sherburne. Not the visitor center we've been trying to get funding for (for 15 years), but a portion of it. Since the old school house was closed, this new building will replace it in function. It will be a place to meet for field trips, hold classes and training, etc. Seating for about 60 people in the entire room, and can also be divided into two rooms with a folding wall. I can see some possible use by/for birders! It will be pretty basic, and no frills since budget is limited, but at least we'll finally have SOMETHING! [mou-net] Live From Freeborn County
Prothonotary Warblers near where the Brown Pelican had been seen at Myre-Big Island State Park. A Yellow-throated Warbler had been reported in the park as well, but I was unable to find it. I did see Black Terns and Franklin's Gulls. A pair of White-faced Ibises were about 1/4 mile east of Emmons on Stateline Road, on the north side of road. Good luck. [mou-net] MOU Field Trip: Arden Hills Armory - Ramsey County
Hello Birders! This is a Tuesday trip, June 11th. Your guide will be Bob Holtz The trip will begin at 8am and last until about 11am. Don't miss your opportunity to see inside AHATS (the old arsenal area). It is a great field trip site and is rarely open to the public. Its habitat includes open water with marsh, wooded areas and grasslands and rolling hills. This is a walking tour with little shade. Come prepared for a hike out in the open. Species we will likely find include Common Loon, Osprey, Wild Turkey, several woodpecker species, a few sparrow species, including nesting Grasshopper Sparrows, Trumpeter Swans, Eastern Kingbird and Bank Swallow, among others. The site, is just off MN Hwy 96 between 35W and Lexington Ave. Go north on Hamline Ave. a few hundred feet to the first gate on the right. Just inside the gate there will be parking space. The group will be limited to 16. To sign up, contact trip leader Bob Holtz at bobholt...@comcast.net. Heavy rain, but not a mist, will cancel the trip. -- Sincerely, Jim Ryan MOU Field Trip Chair There has been a tremendous renaissance in nature study in recent years; it has been called a form of escapism, and perhaps it is in a way, but not an escape from reality; but rather, a return to reality; a flight from unreal things. - *Roger Tory Peterson* Birdwatchers, whether they are princes, tycoons, housewives or kids, they tend to be a bit more civilized, a bit more aware, than most non-watchers. *-Roger Tory Peterson* Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

[mou-net] bird tour leaders for Sherburne NWR
Now that Pastor Al Schirmacher has moved to Kansas, the refuge Hi All, Now that Pastor Al Schirmacher has moved to Kansas, the refuge is short on bird field trip leaders. Doug Stucki is great, but he's got an over-full schedule, with leading butterfly trips and helping us with our environmental education program, plus all of his other activities. If anyone is available to help us out, I'd appreciate it. All you'd have to commit to is one trip (or more if you'd like) a year - timing at your availability, but we need to be able to put the date on a calendar of events and count on you for that date ahead of time. They can be hiking one of the trails, or just going around the wildlife drive with stops made - whatever you wish to do. If we can't find tour leaders, we will not be able to offer guided trips. I know many of you prefer to come up birding on your own. But for every one of you who likes to bird this way, I probably have 5 others who ask about guided trips. We also have requests for a guide for youth groups on occasion. If you are able to help out in any way, please email me back channel. Thanks very much! [mou-net] Birding Stuff
I spent Saturday birding in Winona, Wabasha, and Dakota counties. The best birds of the day included a Black-billed Cuckoo (south of Lake City) and several calling Whip-poor-wills near Frontenac. I had a Whip-poor-will in a valley west of Lake City that I often find them during the summer. The other two locations (west and north of Frontenac Station) are locations that I find them only during migration. We had lots of good birds for the Breeding Bird Atlas. The Whip-poor-wills were heard during my Frog Toad survey. This was probably the worst FT survey run that I have had in the approximately ten years I have done this. I had more birds singing at night (8) than frogs and toads (3). Those are not the number of species, but the number of individuals.
