Re: [mou-net] RFI regarding Cedar Waxwing puzzle
Linda, I had a pair of Cedar Waxwings start a nest in one of my Bluebird boxes this year. (The hole was a tiny bit too big) They barely covered the ground of the box then laid 2 eggs. Then they abandoned the nest. I know this isn't the same thing that your friend experienced, but it was all very weird. Just thought I would share this happening from here in Minnesota!! [mou-net] RFI regarding Cedar Waxwing puzzle
A friend has observed some unusual Cedar Waxwing behavior. A pair of Waxwings has been going in and out of his Kestrel boxes as though considering them for nesting. He mentioned that the boxes are filled nearly to the openings with twigs and other materials placed there by occupying House Wrens. I suggested that the Waxwings might be raiding nest materials, or else gathering insects for meals. He wants to know if they might nest there. Has anyone heard of this phenomenom? [mou-net] FW: ABC study of neonicotinoids & birds-- use 5 digit zipcode
I just tried to sign this petition and I entered my 9-digit zipcode. It did not work. I tried no abbr. in address, etc. I called ABC and talked to a Stephanie. She said DO NOT use 9 digit--- ONLY 5 digit zipcode. It worked beautifully. So, if you are like me and have zero tolerance for computer nonsense, please try again. My message went to Rep. Betty McCollum in St Paul. The whole country has this problem with the petition. She is going to try to fix it at ABC with the contractor. I think they do good work, save a lot of habitat, and their publications are very informative (also amazing bird photography). ABC issued a report on these pesticides. They are very toxic to bees, but they are also toxic to birds. One treated seed can kill an adult songbird. If you look at this report (or abc website) you should also find a petition to EPA to prohibit their use. There is a bill in Congress to do that also. http://www.abcbirds.org/newsandreports/releases/130319.html Gordon Andersson St Paul Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
