Garrett Wee reported a pair of CALIFORNIA GULLS on the 9th at the Cottonwood sewage ponds in Lyon County. The ponds are just southeast of the junction of state highway 23 and 390th Street. On August 13th, Karl Bardon found a light-morph juvenile PARASITIC JAEGER at the Superior Entry of Park Point in Duluth. This was one of five jaegers he found in Wisconsin waters, but the only one to venture into Minnesota. Bill Marengo reported a pair of CAROLINA WRENS on the 4th along the hiking club trail of Minneopa State Park in Blue Earth County. Just prior to the campground, take the trail west for about a five minute walk. Watch for several 5-6' tall sticks leaning against an oak tree on the north side of the trail which marks the spot where the wrens were found. On the 15th, Josh Wallestad spotted a pair of BLUE GROSBEAKS on a power line along Cottonwood County Road 10, about 100 yards east of state highway 23. Brian Smith discovered one in Brown County on the 8th, at a gravel pit a few miles southeast of Sleepy Eye at 24214 - 220th St. A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was seen in Scott County by Gerald Hoekstra on the 15th along state highway 19 about two miles west of New Prague. Other fall migrants reported include SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, DUNLIN, RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, CASPIAN TERN, OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, and SWAINSON'S THRUSH. Interestingly, Rene Tressler reported BLUE-WINGED WARBLERS feeding young at the Snake River golf course in Pine County on August 5th. The next scheduled update is Thursday August 23rd, 2013. [mou-net] more McLeod shorebirds
Today, 08/16, probably a thousand or more shorebirds on Lewis Lake, on the north side of MN Hwy. 212, about a mile east of Brownton in McLeod Cty. Overwhelmingly Pectoral Sands., perhaps 350-400+ About another third of them seemed to be Lssr. Yellowlegs Lower numbers of Least, Semipalmated Sands., and Killdeer, with a few Wilson's Phalaropes (and there must be some Baird's in there somewhere). Unless we get a lot of rain, this could be excellent shorebird habitat all fall. CAUTION: Extremely busy and noisy truck-filled highway, with very poor shoulder parking, but you can pull over just off the blacktop. There is some closer-up viewing, but many of the birds are very far out. Scopes necessary. [mou-net] Fwd: IBET FW: Update on Paton's Property in Patagonia, AZ
*From:* David Starrett *Date:* August 15, 2013, 5:54:38 PM CDT *To:* "ilbi...@yahoogroups.com" *Subject:* *IBET FW: Update on Paton's Property in Patagonia, AZ* For those who have ever visited or know of Paton's in SE AZ this may be of interest. Personally I have 6 lifers plus quite a lot of other great birds from this place and hope to have a chance to visit it again. Dave ~~ David Starrett Cape Girardeau, MO ~~ --- To: All Birders From: Rita Fenwick, American Bird Conservancy Date: August 14, 2013 Alert: Hummingbird Haven Facing Uncertain Future - Act Now Several months ago, American Bird Conservancy board member Victor Emanuel made an impassioned request that American Bird Conservancy help acquire an American birding landmark that had recently come on the market: Paton’s Birder Haven. This property, located in Patagonia, Arizona, is the loving project of Wally and Marion Paton, who for more than 35 years built their property into a premier Arizona birding site and opened their home to thousands of local, American, and international birders to see Arizona’s outstanding hummingbird diversity. Many visited the site for a chance to get a “life” Plain-capped Starthroat, Violet-crowned Hummingbird, or Magnificent Hummingbird for their North American list. The property has passed on to the Paton’s children, who would like to honor their parents’ labor of love in making the property a memorable, welcoming stop for birders visiting Arizona. In partnership with Tucson Audubon Society and Victor Emanuel Nature Tours, American Bird Conservancy has entered into a contract with the Paton family to acquire the property and to maintain the property in perpetuity as a hummingbird sanctuary open to visitors. We have raised $100,000 of the needed funding, but urgently need to raise by October 15th the remaining $200,000. Once acquired, Tucson Audubon Society will assume long-term ownership and management of the property. Can you please help by making a donation at http://www.abcbirds.org/paton/ and by FORWARDING this email to as many birders as you can, encouraging them to click on the link provided and make a donation today? Please post this request for help on blogs, Facebook, Twitter, websites, and any other outlet you think will reach birders who have visited Paton’s or plan to in the future. One hundred percent of each tax-deductible donation will be applied to the acquisition and management needs of this historic property. We truly need every dollar to succeed. Thank you very much for your support and help! Please let me know if you have any questions or you have a favorite picture from Paton’s Birder Haven you would like to share.
