2013-12-13 Thread Betsy Beneke
At 4:30 this afternoon I found a snowy owl on Benton CR 59, one block north of
it's intersection with Benton CR 13 (Little Rock Lake Rd NE).  The bird was
sitting on top of a power pole just down from house number 10290.  CR 13 runs
east-west between Hwys 25 and 10.

[mou-net] Swans Blue Earth Cty

2013-12-13 Thread john c nelson
A few minutes ago as I walked down our driveway to retrieve the mail, I was a
bit startled to see a pair of swans fly over
the neighbor's grove across the road from us. They were flying low and dropped
down toward the fields to the south and out of sight.
No idea whether trumpeter or tundra. Seems late , certainly no open water other
than possibly the rivers Cobb or Maple.
Aeration units were activated on Lura and Ida lakes on the 5th, but no open
water as yet.

[mou-net] Snowy Owls in Stearns County.

2013-12-13 Thread Frank Gosiak
Its been a kinda different year for birding. Two more Snowy Owl reports.
This morning at the intersections of 215th ave. and 430th street and at
River street and cty road 3, two more owls were found. This is in Northern
Stearns County near Holdingford. If someone likes cruising the country this
is within a half an hour from the other 3 reported (still on site) in
Southern Morrison County. I teach school and talk about birds to my
students, their parents and bus drivers.. Nothing (almost nothing) slips
through our area without Milt and I getting a report. These two owls are
valid because the people who saw them are familiar with Snowy Owls. I wonder
why so many are hitting our area?

[mou-net] Vega Gull? Dakota Co. 2011

2013-12-13 Thread
Hi All—

Karl Bardon et al. recently posted an excellent photo of a possible Vega
Gull in Duluth on the “Recently Seen” MOU page:
http://moumn.org/cgi-bin/recent.pl.

I believe a photo I took in January 2011 is also of a Vega Gull. This
photo, for the record, is on my blog and shows both a dark-mantled possible
Vega and a lighter Herring Gull. At the time, I was itching to identify
the Vega as a Slaty-backed Gull, but neither species landed on my lifelist.

[mou-net] King Eider still present

2013-12-13 Thread Kim R Eckert
Craig Mandel just called at 9:30 am today (Friday) to report that he and others
are looking at the female King Eider. It is now just E of 23rd Ave East, but
there is a path leading E from the end of 23rd along the lakeshore which
currently provides the best viewing. Craig says at least one of the White-w
Scoters is still there, but the female Barrow's Goldeneye is not being seen at
this time.

[mou-net] 3 Snowy Owls

2013-12-13 Thread Frank Gosiak
The third snowy owl located in Morrison County this year was spotted by
Gerald Yourczek (Holdingford science teacher) at the intersection of County
21 (30th street) and 100th ave. 1 mile south and 2 miles west of Bowlus.
Busy area for owls this year. We found a Long Eared a week ago not far from
this location. The owl is a mature, very white bird and is hunting around
the area. Some years I have to travel the whole county to see 1 bird then
the last 3 years multiple ones have been showing up. All these birds are
just outside of the CBC circle (south) for Little Falls that will be going
on tomorrow. I hope we find more when we do the count.

[mou-net] Second snowy owl at Royalton

2013-12-13 Thread Betsy Beneke
Sherburne Refuge volunteer, Mary Carlson, found a second snowy owl west of
Royalton, Morrison County, yesterday afternoon.  She shared an image of the
bird with me, and it has quite a bit of brown spotting on it, and is much more
wary than the bird I saw on Wednesday, which was mostly white with just a few
small brown spots. It was hanging around the farm and in the field to the
south, sitting on irrigation pipes, on the ground, or on power poles around the
farm.

From Hwy. 10 at Royalton, turn west on CR 27 (Nature Road) at the light.  This
bird was near the farm that's just west of the 160th Ave intersection and in
the field to the south of the road - about 1 mile west of Royalton.
