[mou-net] Recent Morrison County .

2013-12-28 Thread Frank Gosiak
Occasionally , one Snowy Owl is seen near Royalton (by the Royal Farm site). A
few Snow
Buntings are flying through and flocks of Tree Sparrows. Things are still quiet
on a whole. I
did find a Northern Goshawk just South of Little Falls on the Old Hwy 10
road(1/4 mile
South of the hospital). There were a lot of Eagles on Nature Road East of Little
Rock about 2
miles, near a chicken barn on the South side of the road. No new Owl sitings
lately. I will be
on a CBC in Philbrook (Todd County) on JANUARY 1 st. Will report ant
interesting findings.

[mou-net] Snowy Owl - Dakota Co.

2013-12-28 Thread Steve Weston
This evening at dusk I found a Snowy Owl NE of Vermilion while
participating in the Hastings CBC. The almost pure white owl was sitting
on an irrigation truss.Directions to where it was observed: from 190th
Street, go north on Hogan Avenue past the grain elevators and look east.
It was on the south most irrigation unit. It was not refound just a
little while after I left the area.

The owl was a delicious dessert on an absolutely beautiful day for birding.
In addition I found a Rough-legged Hawk (another was also found), five
Brown Creepers, and 22 Eurasian Collared Doves (all outside of Vermillion).
Also reported was a Long-tailed Duck at Prescott, a Greater Scaup, a
Bluebird, and a White-crowned Sparrow.

[mou-net] Savaloja Grants

2013-12-28 Thread Steve Wilson
The web link in my Dec. 10 post apparently didn't work, so I'm posting the
notice again, hopefully with a link that works. If not, go to the MOU home
page and look for the Savaloja Granks link under "Birding in Minnesota."

SAVALOJA SMALL GRANTS PROGRAM

Every year the MOU supports several bird-related projects through the
Savaloja Grants Program. This year grants ranged from $700 to $1400.
Projects funded in 2013 included a native plant restoration of T.S Roberts
Bird Sanctuary, color banding and blood analysis of nestling Peregrine
Falcons, field guides and binoculars for a Young Naturalist Program, bird
banding equipment for research banding at Sugarloaf Cove Nature Center,
and sterilizing equipment to make owl pellets safe for student dissections.

For 2014 MOU has up to $8000 available to fund projects, including $3000
from a donation to support projects that diversify Minnesota’s birding
community by recruiting or involving minorities and people of color. These
groups are currently underrepresented among Minnesota birders, but are
projected to grow from 9% of Minnesota’s population in 2000 to 16% by
2030. Encouraging their participation in birding will help keep MOU strong
and better able to speak for all Minnesotans on bird-related issues.

Individuals or organizations are encouraged to submit grant applications to
the MOU for Minnesota projects that increase our understanding of birds,
promote preservation of birds and their natural habitats, or increase public
interest in birds, including in populations currently underrepresented in
Minnesota's birding community.

Application information may be obtained by emailing gra...@moumn.org,
or going to http://moumn.org/grantinfo_2014.pdf.

The deadline for receipt of grant applications is January 31, 2014. Grant
recipients will be notified by April 1, 2014.

[mou-net] Snowy Owls in western Minnesota

2013-12-28 Thread Herb Dingmann
Yesterday Ron Erpelding and I made to trip to western Minnesota to see if we
could find more Snowy Owls. We were fairly successful, finding a Snowy Owl
in each of 4 different counties:

Douglas County: 4 miles north of Osakis on CR3 (there had been a previously
reported bird 6 miles north of Osakis)
Grant County: CR12, just west of where 320th Ave goes south. This is near
the western edge of the county.
Traverse County: CR64 goes east, south, and back west off of CR15 in the
southeastern corner of the county. The Owl was in the field at the
southeast corner of CR64.
Big Stone County: 690th Ave about 1/2 mile north of 260th St (also called
CR54 on the streetsign, but is labeled as CR2 on my map). This is in the
northeast corner of the county.

Today Ron was busy with family doings, so I went on my own intending to
check a few more counties. I spent most of the day in Pope County without
finding a Snowy Owl there. However, I did find one on the Stevens/Pope
county line (400th Ave) on the Stevens County side of the road. This
location is south of Cyrus (Pope County) about 6 miles, midway between 250th
St. and 260th St. These two streets are in Stevens County, but correspond
to what they would be if they continued into Pope County.

Use caution in exploring these areas. There are many "No Maintenance" roads
out there. All of these birds are on maintained roads, but even these roads
can have some drifts since the last snowplow went through.

[mou-net] Cloquet Snowy & Barred Owls

2013-12-28 Thread Jared Del Rosso
My brother-in-law spotted a snowy owl fly-over and perch on the Queen of
Peace Parish church (4th St and Avenue F.) in Cloquet around dusk today
(Saturday, December 28). I watched it for about 20-30 minutes before it
flew off north toward the downtown / St. Louis River area.

I spotted a barred owl along the trail that leads north out of Spafford
Park. It was about 15-20 minutes beyond the park.

Best,
Jared

[mou-net] advice for the extreme cold

2013-12-28 Thread Benji Inniger
Hi all. I am planning bringing my wife up to Duluth and Sax-Zim tomorrow
and Monday. I've been up the last several winters, but this would be my
wife's first trip up to look for owls and other northern specialties.
(Snowy, Great Grey, and Northern Hawk would all be lifers for her. How
exciting!) At any rate, I am concerned about the brutal cold that is
headed our way. For you more experienced up north: does that extreme
cold greatly reduce our chances of finding things? Unfortunately this is
our only window to get up there for awhile, but it's difficult to commit
to the trip if it's going to be too cold to be worthwhile. What have
been your experiences in similar weather? Thanks in advance for the advice!

Currently two Snowy Owls perched on utility poles along county 5 north of the
railroad crossing. This is north of US 12. Unfortunately no shoulder here.

This evening while looking for the Howard Lake individual, one was found at
CR5/50th near the Smith Lake RR tracks, ~1mi N of Hwy12, 4:30pm. It was very
white with few flecking, no real "goggle" white diagnostic about the eyes, very
little "dust" on crown, perhaps the same individual as CR6/30th. At deep
twilight it flew west, north of Smith Lake. mjb
