[mou-net] Harlequin Duck from yesterday and today's Brrrrdathon sightings

2014-01-10 Thread Erik Bruhnke
I birded Sax-Zim Bog today to lead a birding trip and to participate in the
Bdathon fundraiser for Friends of Sax-Zim Bog. Had some great times
hiking through the bog trails, and birding throughout the lightly falling
snow. Saw a Great Gray Owl, Northern Hawk Owl, Gray Jays, a Boreal
Chickadee, SO MANY Black-capped Chickadees, and more. Had a great time
leading a birding trip and birding for a good cause, to help raise funds
for Friends of Sax-Zim Bog. eBird list from today's visit to the bog is
below:

Here is a Great Gray Owl from today in Sax-Zim Bog, non-baited of course (I
will never bait owls). We got to watch this bird for nearly twenty minutes!

Yesterday afternoon I found an adult male Harlequin Duck on the north side
of the Silver Bay marina. We had great looks at many flocks of Pine
Grosbeaks and American Goldfinches throughout Highway 1 and Highway 2, and
ended the day with a Snowy Owl in Duluth.

Here is a photo of the Harlequin Duck.

Found a moose yesterday too!

Excited for another day of birding and fundraising for Friends of Sax-Zim
Bog. Tomorrow is the last day of the Bdathon.

Good birding,

[mou-net] Another Polk County Snowy Owl

2014-01-10 Thread Sandy Aubol
I found my 5th Snowy Owl in Polk County this afternoon on Polk County 18 (320th
Ave SW), between 200th and 210th St. SW, or 4.6 miles north of Highway 2.

Joanne Johnson also reported one this morning just east of Fisher, MN, also
Polk County).

[mou-net] Northern Hawk Owl in McLeod County

2014-01-10 Thread Kristine Leuze
I was told my find today may be of interest to this group. Today while
looking for a snowy, I was driving just north of Hutchinson (McLeod County)
towards Meeker County on Tagus Avenue and noticed what I thought was a
small hawk on a utility line. I slowed down when it appeared to be
something else. I stopped and snapped a photo and later identified it as a
Northern Hawk Owl. The exact location would be County Rd 12 (Tagus Avenue)
and the 230th Street intersection. Here is a link to a photo:

[mou-net] Morrison, Stearns, Benton area.

2014-01-10 Thread Frank Gosiak
When Milt Blomberg and I first started reporting Snowy Owls in the Morrison,
Benton, and Stearns area there were only a few scattered reports around the
State. Then everything broke loose and reports started coming in from
everywhere so my new reports don't seem to have the same clout as the
earlier ones. But, we do have 3 more to report. One just East of the
Holdingford School property in Stearns. Another West of Holdingford on Hwy
17, take a left towards Albany on County 10 and go South 2 miles. The third
one is from Morrison County and is West of Bowlus 1/2 mile in the large
open farm field on the North side. That's it for now until Milt and I
stumble across something or our sources report in. The one West of
Holdingford on Mn. 17 and 215 th is still being reported and a few reports
are coming in fromthe Royal Farms just West of Royalton. Other than that I
am picking up more Snow Buntings and Tree Sparrows. It still is relatively
quiet out there.

[mou-net] Snowy Owl report in Scott County

2014-01-10 Thread Bob Dunlap
A coworker just told me about a Snowy Owl he saw two days ago about 4 miles
west of New Prague along Hwy. 19, just on the Scott County side of the
Scott/Le Sueur border. He mentioned that he didn't see it passing by the
same location yesterday but might still be worth a more extensive search.
He also said that it appeared to be a younger bird.

[mou-net] Robin in Edina

2014-01-10 Thread Erica Forman
I spotted an American Robin in southwestern Edina yesterday afternoon. I
know they aren't entirely rare to spot in the dead of winter, but I was
relieved to see it survived the arctic blast of the past few days.

[mou-net] snowy owls in Becker county

2014-01-10 Thread Beau Shroyer
This morning I took my 3 oldest children (6, 5, 2 years old) to hunt for snowy
owls. We found 2! The first was on Becker Co 13, 1/4 mile south of Becker Co
14. It was perched on a power pole. All three kids saw it through the window
mounted spotting scope. It only took 25 minutes to find. They, and I, loved
it. Then we spent two hours playing in the snow in a nearby WPA. We drove one
mile from where we were playing and found another, more mottled, bird. I think
it was 320th Ave. It's the second west/east road north of Bisson Lake on
Hamden Slough NWR. It was on a power pole, then flew to an abandoned silo.
Great fun. Total time birding was less than one hour. Talked to a coyote
hunter who said he's been seeing several snowys north of Audubon, Lake Park,
Hawley in the last weeks.

[mou-net] Minnesota Snowy Owl Report & Map

2014-01-10 Thread Michael Hendrickson
Spent the day tabulating Snowy Owl reports and adding them to the Snowy Owl
Map.

Minnesota has 149 Snowy Owls reported on the MOU listserv and eBird.

Thanks everyone for sending me "thank you" emails me and they are much
appreciated. Thanks also to all those who send me personal emails to me
about the owls they spotted in Minnesota.

I wonder if we will hit 200 by March?

Mike
