[mou-net] Red headed woodpecker early arrival, Mower County
Neighbors in NW Mower County report that a male red headed woodpecker arrived early this week and has stayed around their feeders since. They had a nesting pair at their place last summer. I would also like to share the following signs of spring: regular sightings of eagles flying up and down the Cedar River north of Austin lately, and singing cardinal and chickadee in Eden Prairie yesterday. [mou-net] Waseca County Snowy Owl
A snowy owl is perched on a pole at the corner of 205th Ave and 105th St. This is about 2.5 miles south of HWY 30 and SE of the previous sightings. [mou-net] Ramsey Snowy Owls
I saw both Snowy Owls today in the city of Ramsey. The west side owl was in one of its usual spots and at approximately 3:30pm there was one gentleman there taking photos with a nice long lens. I didn't see anyone else there and didn't notice this gentleman doing any baiting. I then went to look for the east side owl using the information that I gathered from the Snow Project web site. I found it within 15 minutes. It was sitting up on top of the Cor Living building just west of the City Hall bldg and the NorthStar depot. The owl was atop the roof on the SW corner of the building. What a cool sight. I could actually see it from the stoplight at Armstrong Hwy 10 and also saw it driving on 10 as I was heading back east. [mou-net] Hawk Owls -- courtship behavior?
This afternoon, I drove up to Aitkin County Road 18 to check out my feeding station and make sure it was full. On C.R.18, 1 1/10 miles east of hwy 169 there were two NORTHERN HAWK OWLS sitting about 40 feet apart in two birch trees right beside the road. They were steadily making high pitched squeals to each other. Occasionally they would fly out briefly, swinging back into the birch trees. Once they landed side by side (quickly) -- touching beaks -- still making the high pitched squeals. This continued for over an hour. When I left, they were still at it. I can only assume that this is part of their courtship ritual. Northern Hawk Owls did nest close to that area a couple of years ago. Hopefully, they will again. There was also a GREAT GRAY OWL spotted just to the east of the Hebron Cemetery -- and the BOREAL CHICKADEE and GRAY JAYS are still coming into the feeding station along the snowmobile trail (Moose River Trail) that goes south from 320th Place. A NORTHERN SHRIKE was also seen near the hawk owls. Warren Nelson Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

[mou-net] Live from Freeborn County
On my way to work this morning, I was pleased to see nine Gray Partridges at the intersection of 325th St. and 715th Ave. in Hartland Township. The warm weather (20 degrees, and that's above zero) must have engaged their need to frolic.
