Re: [mou-net] Cape May's at feeders

2014-05-15 Thread Pamela Freeman
We too have had cape mays at our feeders - mostly to the meal worms, but also
the grape jelly.
They are chasing off the other smaller birds such as chickadees and nuthatches
and even sometimes the cat birds.
This is the first time we have seen them, a lifer for me. We live in northern
Anoka county.

well but have not as of yet seen them this morning.

The feeders are right outside our Lodge windows so fantastic viewing of these
special little warblers. We also are still seeing high numbers of the yellow
rumped warblers also coming to the feeders. Once the temps warm up & bugs
more plentiful I am sure they will be moving on.

This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, May 15,
2014 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

Migration continues, and warbler migration has begun in the area. With
the cool weather, warblers should be easier to see this year. Almost
everyone has also reported BALTIMORE ORIOLES, and ROSE-BREASTED
GROSBEAKS in the last few days.

>From Dent in Otter Tail County, Alma Ronningen reported she saw the
first RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD today. Other species seen in her
vicinity this week included TRUMPETER SWAN, OSPREY, VEERY, HARRIS'S
SPARROW, SCARLET TANAGER, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, and BALTIMORE ORIOLE.

Marshall Howe had a belated secondhand report of two possible
WORM-EATING WARBLERS on Hubbard County 13, about 5 miles south of Nevis
sighted on May 10. This would be a very exciting sighting is someone can
verify it.

Linda Schumann at the Rainbow Resort in Becker County reported that
RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD and BALTIMORE ORIOLES have arrived in the
county. The first of the warblers are there also including CAPE MAY
WARBLER, PINE WARBLER, and YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER.

Matt Mecklenburg reported COMMON RAVEN, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, and WESTERN
KINGBIRD in Clay County this week.

On May 10, Sandy Aubol observed COMMON YELLOWTHROAT and PALM WARBLER in
East Grand Forks in Polk County. On the 14th, she saw EASTERN TOWHEE,
HARRIS'S SPARROW, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW,
CHIPPING SPARROW, CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, CAPE MAY WARBLER, ROSE-BREASTED
GROSBEAK, BALTIMORE ORIOLE, and ORCHARD ORIOLE. Steve and Terri Scholand
, southeast of East Grand Forks, reported EASTERN BLUEBIRD, and 20
BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS near their place on May 14. Shelley Steva and I found
a WESTERN KINGBIRD on the UMC campus at Crookston on May 10. Also seen
there were OVENBIRD, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, and PALM WARBLER.

At our feeders east of Thief River Falls in Pennington County on May 15
were a couple of BALTIMORE ORIOLES, and a SWAINSON'S THRUSH was prowling
in the flowerbed.

Steve and Teri Scholand saw a RUBY-THROATED HUMMINBIRD in Alvarado in
Marshall County on May 11. Shelley Steva and I saw a GREAT HORNED OWL
pair with two large owlets in the headquarters yard on May 10. Also seen
there were eight species of warblers, VEERY, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, HERMIT
THRUSH,LINCOLN'S SPARROW , and on Headquarters pool , a WESTERN GREBE,
EARED GREBE, and PIED-BILLED GREBE.

Beth Siverhus reported BALTIMORE ORIOLE, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, and
BROWN THRASHER in Warroad in Roseau County since May 12.

Beth also reported that Ben Huener saw two WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS on Lake
of the Woods off Springsteel Island on May 9.

Thanks to Alma Ronningen, Beth Siverhus, Linda Schumann, Marshall Howe,
Matt Mecklenburg, Sandy Aubol, Steve and Terri Scholand, and Steve
Midthune for their reports.

Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than
Thursday each week, at ajjop...@mncable.net
OR call the Detroit Lakes Chamber's toll
free number: 1-800-542-3992. Detroit Lakes area birders please call
847-9202. Please include the county where the sighting took place. The
next scheduled update of this report is Thursday, May 22, 2014.

[mou-net] cameras and binoculars

2014-05-15 Thread Jim
Many people responded to my questions about cameras and binoculars. My thanks
to all. Some of you are quoted, as we discussed. Not all of that material made
the cut. My apologies to those folks. The column will run in the Home and
Garden section of the StarTribune on May 28 or the first Wednesday in June.

Re: [mou-net] More About the Metro

2014-05-15 Thread linda whyte
I'm surprised a Red-bellied Woodpecker would bother to work at a
Chickadee's small hole, unless it was trying to find food in the cavity, or
planning to enlarge the hole for its own nesting. It seems as though that
kind of behavior is related to the proliferation of the species, to the
detriment of other species.

[mou-net] Black-Throated Green Warbler

2014-05-15 Thread Susan Gilmore

Oh this time of the year is incredible!

We just watched a Black-Throated Green Warbler hop from pine tree to
pine tree in our front yard!

An Indigo Bunting is back along with the Great Crested Flycatcher.
Life is good!

[mou-net] More About the Metro

2014-05-15 Thread Steve Weston
Wendsday

New birds: E. Kingbird on the shore of Quigley Lake.
Swainson's Thrush (FOY) Ham Lake, Anoka Co. They have been avoiding me.
Cliff Swallows flock (100+) starting to build nests at Lifetouch corp
headquarters on Viking Drive just east of Prairie Center Drive on the shore
of Smetana Lake in Eden Prairie. I was told that they made such a mess
last year that they cleaned out the nests. I told the receptionist that
the nests were protected once the birds were occupied.
Other finds: Sand Hill Crane feeding in a bare field along Viking Drive
where it swings around Swan Lake in Oak Grove (Anoka Co). This bird was so
brown that it almost blended in.

One of my neighbors was upset about a Red-bellied Woodpecker cleaning out
the nest of a Chickadee:
" He just flew in , stuck his head in the hole and started to pull stuff
from the house. The chickadee was fluttering his wings and screaming at the
redbelly. I knocked on the window and tried to discourage it but it just
kept ripping the bedding out of the house. I could take it no longer so I
opened the window and hollered at the the red belly and then he finally
flew off leaving the chickadee bewildered and very angry. The female was
screaming also at first but then she flew off. He stuck around. I went out
and picked up the stuffing and put it on the railing thinking he would put
the stuff back in the house but after a bit he too took off. A very sad
story. I mean a wren had already ripped his first attempt at a home apart.
