[mou-net] American Black Duck, 9-Mile Creek area, Hennepin County

2014-10-11 Thread linda whyte
A male American Black Duck was present in the wetlands between the MN River
and the lower reaches of 9-Mile Creek this afternoon. It was easily
distinguished from the numerous mallards by its dark body plumage, lightly
streaked tan neck and head, and yellow-olive beak. Perched on a mudflat and
small log half-way out from the gravel causeway, it spent some minutes
preening, before swimming off toward the flock of mallards on the far
shore. After a brief foray up the creek, we returned and looked for it
again, but could not relocate it in the short time we had.

Also present in the area were some of the expected migrants, like
Yellow-rumped and Palm Warblers, and Golden-crowned Kinglets. The most
numerous were the White-throated Sparrows; a large flock of them were
feeding in the grassy compost area on the river bank, west of the Lyndale
parking lot. They indulged in a communal "hot-tub" party in a huge puddle
on the road, retreating into the weedy grasses, young saplings, and large
brush piles nearby.

[mou-net] Red Crossbill

2014-10-11 Thread Jesse Ellis
Hi all-

While canoeing on the north end of Lake Irene in NE Douglas co last night,
my wife and I were pleased and surprised to have a young Red Crossbill fly
in near enough to see and (hopefully) record faintly. Good bird for the
county.

We've also had a few Pine Siskins and Purple Finches over the past few
days, but Thurs and Fri were very quiet for migrants otherwise. Things have
picked up a little today.

Lake Jennie in Douglas Co had many thousands of coots, upwards of 300
Canvasback, and about 20 Buffleheads.

A few flocks of pipits were the other notable.

[mou-net] Siskin - Spring Lake, Dakota

2014-10-11 Thread Justin Watts
Saw a flock of a dozen Pine Siskin in Dakota County at Spring Lake Park,
Schaar’s Bluff today.

Good numbers of many other birds were present; Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker, Red
Breasted Nuthatches, many Juncos, White-Throated Sparrows, Fox Sparrows, and
flocks of both kinglets. Only saw a single Field Sparrow, but good numbers
of Yellow-Rumped and Palm Warblers, with a few Nashville still coming through.
