Hi all,

Highlights were 100s of redpolls and siskins (including at least 3 Hoaries),

BUT many birds remain:

Sharp-tailed Grouse: Dancing on leks at CR29 and also on the ARkola/CR52 lek at
intersection with Poplar Rd (SW near outhouse like building) BUT you need to be
out and about early

Gray Jays and Boreal Chickadees linger at Admiral Road feeders but will be gone
soon

Great Gray Owl was last seen about a week ago on Nichols Lake Road a couple
miles east of CR7

Reports: (218) 834-2858
Compiler: Jim Lind (jsl...@frontiernet.net)

This is the Duluth Birding Report for March 12th, 2015 sponsored by the
Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

A TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was seen on the 12th in Duluth Township along the
West Knife River Road (CR 231), 0.7 mile west of the northern end of the
Homestead Road (CR 42). A first-cycle ICELAND GULL and a first-cycle
THAYER’S GULL were seen on the 10th on Knife Island in Knife River.

The COMMON EIDER present in the Duluth/Superior area since November was
relocated by Peder Svingen on the 8th at the Barker's Island bridge in
Superior, after not being reported from the area for the previous three
weeks. Three NORTHERN PINTAILS and more than 470 MALLARDS were also
present on the 8th.

Also in Superior, an adult gray-phase GYRFALCON has been seen as
recently as the 8th at the Peavey grain elevators along Connor's Point
Road off US Highway 53, about a half mile east of the Blatnik Bridge.
Birders are reminded to remain on Connor’s Point Road and not trespass
on private property in the area. Joshua Christian saw a LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULL, five adult GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS, TWO ICELAND
GULLS, three THAYER’S GULLS, and 10 GLAUCOUS GULLS on the 7th at the
Superior Landfill.

With the warm weather during the past week there have been several early
arrivals in the area. Jan Green heard a SAW-WHET OWL singing on the 6th
along the Old North Shore Road in Duluth Township, and she saw a TURKEY
VULTURE on the 10th along Highway 61 at the Sucker River. Sparky
Stensaas saw two TRUMPETER SWANS on the 9th just south of Floodwood.
Peder Svingen reported the first RING-BILLED GULLS of the season on the
10th at Interstate Island in the Duluth Harbor. Nate Popkin saw two
CANADA GEESE on the 10th at the Cloquet River on the Munger Shaw Road
(CR 15) north of Duluth. Abbie Valine reported the first NORTHERN
HARRIER of the season on the 10th in Carlton County.

The next scheduled update of this report will be on March 19th.

[mou-net] Townsend's Solitaire, Duluth Township

2015-03-12 Thread Jim Lind
This morning there was a Townsend's Solitaire in Duluth Township
along the West Knife River Road (CR 231), 0.7 mile west of the
northern end of the Homestead Road (CR 42). It flew in from the
east, so it would be worth checking the area around the Homestead
Road, too.

Most of the West Knife River Road in this area is lined with invasive
buckthorn, which the solitaire was seen feeding on. Bohemian
Waxwings were seen in this area earlier in the winter, but I have not
heard any reports in the past three weeks.

[mou-net] [mou-rba] Dam migration update.

2015-03-12 Thread Ron Taube
Hi
I was at the dam this morning with my friend Larry. We saw no gadwall but did
get some Redheads, male and female, a pair of bufflehead, three green winged
teal flying and I believe some ring necks and the usual common mergansers,
goldeneye, and a single Ruddy duck. I’ve posted some more photos. Not the
greatest since they are from a distance but you should do well with your
spotting scopes. People have asked me from where I saw these. Well first of all
on the Coon Rapids side. If you don’t want to pay parking park outside on the
street. Then I would go up to the walkway first. It is closed to walk across
but you can get up to it. Then I would take the trail east of the visitors
center upstream or north and every couple of hundred yards look towards the
river. There are a couple of good areas to sit and wait maybe a quarter mile
upstream and then another quarter mile. There are not large flocks but twenty
to thirty here and there. Good Luck I saw several of you today.

Several days of warm weather is bringing welcome changes. We now have some

Pintails. This morning at Hamden Slough there was a beautiful male Northern
Harrier hunting and 14 Greater Prairie chickens in field where Fish
Wildlife's blind is set up (corner of CR 13 and 106). Happy birding.
