[mou-net] Yellow Medicine and Kandiyohi County field reports

2015-05-04 Thread Josh Wallestad
On Sunday I did some birding in Yellow Medicine County with Garrett Wee and
in Kandiyohi County with Steve Gardner.

Yellow Medicine County:

We birded Miller-Richter WMA and found several hundred shorebirds--many were
peeps, Yellowleg sp., and Pectorals. There were about 15 Long-billed
Dowitchers, several Dunlin, and a few Wilson's Phalaropes.

Later we birded the Spellman Lake area, specifically Miedd Lake. In addition
to the previously posted Ibises, the lake was loaded with shorebirds. We
didn't have time to sort through them, however. This eBird list has the
exact location of the Ibises pinned:

http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S23198793

Kandiyohi County:
The Lake Lillian sewage ponds had few birds but great diversity (18 sp).
Shorebirds:
Wilson's Phalaropes (4)
Spotted Sandpiper (2)
Pectoral Sandpiper (2)
Lesser Yellowlegs (2)
Solitary Sandpiper (nearby on Lake Lillian)

Full list - http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S23197385

Steve and I spent several hours birding Sibley State Park in the evening.
Birds of note:
Field Sparrow (1)
Harris's Sparrow (2)
White-throated Sparrow (50) - low ball estimate
Palm Warbler (4)
Yellow-rumped Warbler (10)
Northern Waterthrush (1)
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher (3)

Full list - http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S23214656

Good birding,
Josh Wallestad

[mou-net] Spring North Bicycle Tour

2015-05-04 Thread Richard Hoeg
Ever wonder what is would be like to bike and bird north with the Spring? My
wife and I have
now completed over 1,200 miles (self-supported) as we follow the spring north.
We first
bicycled from near Fort Worth south to the Texas Hill Country. After that
region we swung
east and north through the Ozark Mountains. Over the next week we will be
cycling along the
Missouri River. One never knows what birds one will see, if any, but the quest
is fun. Learn
and see more via my blog at http://www.365DaysOfBirds.com/

[mou-net] Grey Cloud Dunes SNA Washington County 11Sparrow Species. May 4th, 2015

2015-05-04 Thread Scott Meyer
I had a great afternoon birding Grey Cloud Dunes SNA from 4:30 to 6:30
PM. I found Grasshopper, Clay-colored and Henslow's Sparrows in the
traditional long grass areas on the top of the dunes. The western slope
and bottom of the dunes that have just been burned had an incredible number
of birds including Swamp, Lincoln, White-crowned, White-throated, Field,
Vesper, Savannah, and Song Sparrows. Eastern Towhee, and Brown Thrasher
were singing loudly and the afternoon was capped by a Peregrine Falcon
cruising down the dune face.

2015-05-04 Thread Jesse Ellis
Sharon Stiteler reported the bird being seen around 10am this morning from
the far northeast location at the Bass Ponds, very far off.

Good luck,
Jesse

PS - this is a prime time and concentration of birds for a little Patagonia
Picnic Table effect to kick in, by the way...

Hi
This morning while watching the Osprey at the CRD on the BP side i saw a dozen
or so sparrows mostly white throats but there was at least one Harris sparrow
in the bunch. It was my first of the year.

2015-05-04 Thread Steve Midthune
Good assortment of shorebirds at Hamden Slough including Wilson's Phalarope.
A flock of White-fronted Geese also at Bisson Lake (north end of refuge).
Because of drought, less water and more mud flats in local wetlands. Good
for shorebirds but not farmers. Besides Bisson Lake check out South Wetlands
across from old refuge HQ. Shorebird viewing should be good next week at DL
Festival.

[mou-net] About the Metro

2015-05-04 Thread Steve Weston
this weekend I got to spend a little time outside at home for a change.
Besides the regular yard birds little else was around. Spending time
outside I did get to hear the Titmouse calling several times.

The things of interest was the frog and toad calls. During the day I heard
for the first time this year short calls from both American Toads and Copes
Gray Treefrogs. They both called on a bright sunny afternoon rather than
at night. But, the calls were short, like they were testing their voices.
At night when I listened neither called and I only heard the sonorous calls
of a Northern Leopard Frog.

[mou-net] [mou-rba] Shorebirds in Nicollet County

2015-05-04 Thread Heins, Chad
Hey birders,

Shorebirds are particularly difficult to get this spring in Nicollet
County. The best site I’ve found so far is the same location where the
White-faced Ibis was found earlier this spring. This “cattle pond” is
located on CR111 south of CR5 north of Nicollet, MN. Yesterday I also
found a Marbled Godwit at the Swan Lake WMA—Courtland East unit north of
Courtland, MN on T-91. New migrants showing up now.

Happy birding!
