[mou-net] Neotropic Cormorant on Sham Lake
(Posted by Garrett Wee via moumn.org) This evening Brad, Seth Boerboom and I observed a Neotropic Cormorant roosting with around 75 Double-crested Cormorants on the eastern end of the lake! The group then flew to Cottonwood Lake. We were unable to relocate it afterwords unfortunately, I'm going to keep updates on this bird and have the others keep updates as well! [mou-net] Another Ruff, Bass Ponds (Hennepin Co.)
This afternoon from 4:00-6:00 p.m. I watched a female Ruff at the Bass Ponds. She was hanging out with Lesser Yellowlegs, Wilson's Phalaropes, White-rumped, Least, and Semipalmated Sandpipers (5 avocets were nearby). This is a different bird from the one found by Steve Carlson two weeks ago, but it is in about the same area as that one was initially (south of the beaver pond and stream). From the main upper parking lot off 86th St., walk down the hill on the road to the lake. Bear left, then take the well-traveled path through the woods to the open flats where many people viewed the previous Ruff. The bird was fairly close (150-200 yards), but a scope is necessary. She was still in the same general location when I left at 6:00. [mou-net] Osprey
Early last week we saw an osprey on the platform by the waterworks at Lake Vadnais. I reported the sighting to Vanessa Greene for the Osprey Watch. We have not seen an osprey on this platform since the one time - the first time we have ever seen an osprey there. We don't get there every day and I'm hoping if anyone else happens to see the osprey on that platform they will report it. I don't know if this was just a one-time thing, I hope not. If you see an osprey on that platform, please send the information to: Vanessa Greene Twin Cities Metro Osprey Watch osprey...@att.net Ospreywatch.blogspot.com on Facebook too! If you would also CC to me, I would appreciate it! Thanks. Gail Wieberdink wiebe...@comcast.net On another note, there must have been a big bug hatch today on Lake Vadnais. There were hundreds of swallows flying over the lake and in the parking area on the point. Tree, barn, and rough-winged for sure, could have been others but they were moving fast! [mou-net] Black-headed Grosbeak, Crow Wing County
John Richardson found and photographed a BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK in his yard in Brainerd (Crow Wing Co). He posted the sighting and pics on the MN Birding Facebook page, and he welcomes visitors. His address is 409 Holly St. Brained. Crow Wing Co. He added the following note: "In low lilacs and red pines right behind kids slide. Walk in drive way, back gate, look north. Robin nest on window of garage. Please be respectful of them if you come." The bird was still there as of 5 hours ago (sorry...I've been out and am just getting the report now). [mou-net] Indian Point Campground (Duluth) warblers
Just got back from two hours spent watching hundreds of warblers, 16 kinds in all, along the trail that skirts the perimeter of the campground. There were approx. 100 Wilson's Warblers, with equal or greater numbers of Am. Redstarts, Yellow Rumps, plus good numbers of Chestnut-Sideds and Palms. Most of the warblers were actively foraging low including many who were on the ground. Most warblers were concentrated just below the campground on the eastern side out to the point. Also notable, a pair of Scarlet Tanagers and a chorus of Soras. [mou-net] Black-throated Green Warbler hybrid—NOT
Hi All— I got all excited that I had banded a hybrid Black-throated Green x Townsend’s warbler hybrid on Saturday. My blog this morning explains why it probably is not a hybrid, but just a very good-looking Black-throated Green. http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com dan -- Dan or Erika Tallman Northfield, Minnesota daner...@gmail.com http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com " the best shod travel with wet feet...Beware of all enterprises that require new clothes ”—H. [mou-net] massive reverse migration on the North Shore
Bob Myers just called to report a huge movement of warblers and flycatchers on the North Shore around Split Rock State Park. He saw 24 warbler species in just a few hours, including many foraging at his feed in the rocks along the shore. Most of the birds were moving southwest down the shore. As I was talking to Bob and looking out my office window in Two Harbors, I saw a Mourning Warbler fly across our parking lot and dozens of other warblers flying overhead, all going southwest. It has been cold and wet for the past 3-4 days and the birding has been incredible in northeast Minnesota. Yesterday at Lighhouse Point in Two Harbors I saw 22 warbler species, Olive-sided and Yellow-bellied Flycatchers, and 4 vireo species. We had 4 Scarlet Tanagers eating oranges in our yard, over a dozen Baltimore Orioles, 20+ Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, and a male Bobolink. On Saturday at Park Point at least 25 warbler species were reported, including two Black-throated Blue Warblers (Connecticut was the only "regular" species not reported). The forecast for tonight in Two Harbors is 35 degrees with drizzle and/or snow, so I suspect the birding will be good for the next few days. Hopefully it warms up soon for the birds' sake, though. [mou-net] Duluth Township-New Arrivals
New arrivals this weekend include: Coot, Rose Breasted Grosbeak, Baltimore Oriole and Belted Kingfisher Also, the pair of Canada Geese hatched 6 goslings. Despite having an island on my larger pond, which geese have used in the past, they instead used a post mounted basket I had placed in one of my smaller ponds.
