[mou-net] [mou-rba] Loggerhead Shrikes in Blue Earth County

2015-05-23 Thread Heins, Chad
Hey birders,

A visit to friends up near Kasota Prairie took me past a pair of Loggerhead
Shrikes harassing a Red-tailed Hawk on a powerline. These birds are being
seen in extreme northern Blue Earth County along 570th Avenue. Take CR5
north from Mankato (3rd Avenue) and turn west on 238th Street (there’s a
horse pasture on your left). If you pass over a railroad track, you’ve
gone too far. The birds were within the first 0.5 mile right along the
road. They appear to be nesting so please minimize disturbance.

Happy birding!

Chad Heins

[mou-net] Caspian Terns - Kandiyohi County

2015-05-23 Thread Josh Wallestad
Today while fishing with the family I came across four Caspian Terns at the
outflow of Green Lake which is in the NE corner of the lake. The Terns were
in a backwater just south of the main outflow on the east side of Co. Rd. 4.
Two of them flew west out over Green Lake and didn't return, but at least
one remained when I left at 5:10. Additionally, I discovered a pair of
Common Loons with one of them sitting on a nest. I posted a picture of the
Caspian Tern and the two Loons on the MOU website.

[mou-net] article on Joel Sartore, NGSocy photog from "Audubon"

2015-05-23 Thread Gordon Andersson
MOU photographers

I just reread this article from March 2015 about J Sartore's project to
photo every species of animal in captivity around the world. I guess he
thinks of it as a archive of biodiversity, a photographic ark. The whole
purpose is to build public awareness of need for conservation. The print
issue of the magazine includes a two page spread of 100's of thumbnails of
some of the project photos to date.

You might have seen the article in March 2013 Audubon with the cover of the
endangered Florida Grasshopper Sparrow. The pictures there were all his and
the FWS increased funding for the bird more than 10-fold after publication.

PS he uses Nikon.

[mou-net] Re-find of White-eyed Vireo

2015-05-23 Thread Bob Ekblad
I was able to find the White-eyed Vireo at Flandrau SP that was recently
reported. Follow the hiking club trail behind the swimming pond to the second
opening at the river (the one with the fence). The bird was calling constantly
mid morning and was 20 feet off the ground in plain sight (not hidden in dense
bushes like usual).
