The summer resident species have arrived in the northwest, and all are busy attracting mates, building nests and settling down to raise the year's young. Surprisingly, the weather has also changed to summer conditions, complete with thunderstorms and rain which varies greatly from place to place. All is green now, and flowers are blooming everywhere. Here in our yard near Thief River Falls, Pennington County, on May 26, I saw a BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER and a COMMON NIGHTHAWK. On May 29, a BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was heard in the shrubbery, and on the 30th, a BROWN THRASHER greeted the day with his melodious song. Connie Cox sent in a long list of species seen this week at Itasca State Park including the following warblers: GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER, NASHVILLE WARBLER, NORTHERN PARULA, YELLOW WARBLER, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, PINE WARBLER, AMERICAN REDSTART, and OVENBIRD. Other species seen in the Beltrami Island State Forest included BROWN CREEPER, SEDGE WREN, HERMIT THRUSH, VEERY, many warblers, and SCARLET TANAGER on May 30. Re: [mou-net] no RBA message
Since the rarest of rarities would be birds that are not on the list to be forwarded, could the protocol be modified so that any bird not on the list is included? Re: [mou-net] Gull-billed Tern - Yes!
Ron and Butch got good looks from the South Dakota side of Salt Lake and are convinced it is a Gull-billed Tern - thick black bill, slightly larger size than a Forster's, flight more lethargic than a Forster's. Unfortunately the bird flew off to the west over the fields and out of sight. We're hopeful that it is merely foraging out there and will return. [mou-net] Gull-billed Tern - Yes!
Ron Erpelding, Butch Ukura and I just spotted what we believe is the Gull-billed Tern. We're on the Minnesota side of the lake and the bird was seen across the lake flying about mostly in South Dakota but briefly in Minnesota. We are going to try to get better looks from the South Dakota side. [mou-net] Gull-billed Tern--No
Garrett Wee and I searched all around Salt Lake from 5:30-7:15 and could not find any Terns. There are hundreds of shorebirds. Notables included a single Willet on the SD side, a couple Sanderlings, many Wilson's Phalaropes, and a Dunlin. There were also many Eared Grebes.
