Hotline: Minnesota, Detroit Lakes
Date: June 2, 2016

Reports: 1-800-542-3992 (weekdays during business hours)
Compiler: Jeanie Joppru (ajjop...@mncable.net)

This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, June 2,
2016 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

The summer resident species have arrived in the northwest, and all are
busy attracting mates, building nests and settling down to raise the
year's young. Surprisingly, the weather has also changed to summer
conditions, complete with thunderstorms and rain which varies greatly
from place to place. All is green now, and flowers are blooming
everywhere.

In Polk County on May 30, Joanne Johnson reported BOBOLINKS, and LARK
SPARROW in the meadow on the East Grand Forks side of the south bike
bridge across the Red River.

Here in our yard near Thief River Falls, Pennington County, on May 26, I
saw a BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER and a COMMON NIGHTHAWK. On May 29, a
BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was heard in the shrubbery, and on the 30th, a BROWN
THRASHER greeted the day with his melodious song.

Connie Cox sent in a long list of species seen this week at Itasca State
Park including the following warblers: GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER, NASHVILLE
WARBLER, NORTHERN PARULA, YELLOW WARBLER, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, BLACKBURNIAN
WARBLER, PINE WARBLER, AMERICAN REDSTART, and OVENBIRD.

Mike Thiele in Warroad , Roseau County, reported HOUSE WREN, COMMON
NIGHTHAWK, and EASTERN BLUEBIRD on May 30. ALDER FLYCATCHER, EASTERN
WOOD-PEWEE, and BLUE-HEADED VIREO were seen by Zeann Linder and me in
the Roseau County area of the Beltrami Island State Forest. Gretchen
Mehmel reported three GREAT GRAY OWLS this week. One has been seen 1-2
miles north of Faunce, and one was recently discovered south of Norris
Camp along the airfield. A third was spotted along the Roosevelt Road
about 2.5 miles north of the Faunce-Butterfield Road on May 30. Two
BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER nests have been found along the Thompson Forest
Road in the fire-killed area.

Other species seen in the Beltrami Island State Forest included BROWN
CREEPER, SEDGE WREN, HERMIT THRUSH, VEERY, many warblers, and SCARLET
TANAGER on May 30.

Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than
Thursday each week, at ajjop...@mncable.net OR call the Detroit Lakes
Chamber's toll free number: 1-800-542-3992. Detroit Lakes area birders
please call 847-9202. Please include the county where the sighting took
place. The next scheduled update of this report is Thursday, June 9,
2016..

Re: [mou-net] no RBA message

2016-06-02 Thread Manley Olson
Since the rarest of rarities would be birds that are not on the list to
be forwarded, could the protocol be modified so that any bird not on the
list is included?

Re: [mou-net] Gull-billed Tern - Yes!

2016-06-02 Thread Herb Dingmann
Ron and Butch got good looks from the South Dakota side of Salt Lake and are
convinced it is a Gull-billed Tern - thick black bill, slightly larger size
than a Forster's, flight more lethargic than a Forster's. Unfortunately the
bird flew off to the west over the fields and out of sight. We're hopeful that
it is merely foraging out there and will return.

[mou-net] Gull-billed Tern - Yes!

2016-06-02 Thread Herb Dingmann
Ron Erpelding, Butch Ukura and I just spotted what we believe is the
Gull-billed Tern. We're on the Minnesota side of the lake and the bird was seen
across the lake flying about mostly in South Dakota but briefly in Minnesota.
We are going to try to get better looks from the South Dakota side.

[mou-net] Gull-billed Tern--No

2016-06-02 Thread Josh Wallestad
Garrett Wee and I searched all around Salt Lake from 5:30-7:15 and could
not find any Terns.

There are hundreds of shorebirds. Notables included a single Willet on the
SD side, a couple Sanderlings, many Wilson's Phalaropes, and a Dunlin.
There were also many Eared Grebes.
