Re: [mou-net] robins
There is a huge winter robin roost at the Univ. of St. Thomas, St. Paul (Ramsey Co.). Birds spend the night in a small grove of conifers at the west end of the O’Shaughnessy Science Hall on the south side of Summit Ave., about a block west of Cretin. Sunday evening (1/8), Susan and I censused them as they streamed in to the roost, and totaled an impressive 2,525 birds. I'm sure that we missed some, and we will try another census soon. Robins arrived at the roost continuously from 4:30 to 5:05 p.m., most from the north and northwest (from Shadow Falls ravine), and somewhat fewer from the south and southeast across the parking lot. As we drove there, we saw small flocks on the Minneapolis side flying across the river toward Summit and I think it's likely that some are coming from miles away to reach this roost. Two winters ago (2015-16) there was another big robin roost near Lake Hiawatha in Minneapolis that I monitored, with a peak count of 1,450 birds, but that roost apparently was not used last winter or this one. Re: [mou-net] Robins
We have had a flock of several robins at 49th and Washburn Ave S, Mpls and I've seen them elsewhere in the neighborhood, too. There are several hackberry trees here. (Posted by Bruce Munsonvia moumn.org) Continuing bird seen at feeder at 605 NE 11th Ave. in Grand Rapids at 3:14 pm today (1/9/17). [mou-net] Savaloja Grants Deadline
Only three weeks remain until the Jan. 31 deadline for submitting Savaloja Grant applications for 2017 projects. Proposed projects should increase our understanding of birds, promote preservation of birds and their natural habitats, or increase public interest in birds. Proposals that involve populations currently underrepresented in Minnesota's birding community are welcome as a means of broadening public support for birds and their habitat. A total of $15,000 is available for grants this year. Application information is available on the MOU web site at http://moumn.org/grants.html.
