Re: [mou-net] Sandhill Cranes
Could very well be! "Our" cranes that nest at Carlos Avery WMA near Forest Lake have been back for a couple of weeks already. They are loudly calling from the marshes in the area today. [mou-net] Owl nest?
Does anyone know if the GH Owl used the nest near I-694 and old 5 this year? I know an owl has used it a number of years but did not see anything there this year. (Doesn't mean nothing was there, we just didn't see anything on one or two trips by earlier.) We stopped to look today and just as we stopped, a red-tailed hawk flew to the nest carrying either food or nesting materials, couldn't really tell which in a very quick view. The hawk then settled down in the nest so likely has some eggs. I know owls use other birds' nests so thought I'd ask here. [mou-net] Short eared owl Nicollet county
Swan lake wma. I walked the conifer stand to the west of the main parking lot and flushed an assumed owl. I then walked to the end of it and the owl was in the grass and flew probably towards the stand again. I assume it will hunt tonight if the wind dies down. For now I will let it rest. Only three mou members plus the infamous "historical records" guy has it ticked. Surprising as this is near perfect hunting habitat.
