[mou-net] Strange downy woodpecker
This afternoon in our yard in Wayzata, Hennepin County, we were visited by a downy that puzzled me. It was black and buffy-orange! All the places that should have been white were colored (like the color of an avocet head and neck). There were no white areas at all! Can't imagine what it could have eaten to cause the color and it was so completely colored, it wasn't as if it had just come in contact with something that would have colored some of the feathers. Any ideas? Jan Wicklund Sent from my iPad Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
Re: [mou-net] Red-necked Phalarope - Anoka County
Thank you, Eric, for these postings! We were lucky at all 3 stops, 190th, 165th, and in Forest Lake the turnstones are north of Lakeside Park, 3 docks up, but before a white fence. A spotted sandpiper was nearby, and nighthawks are migrating, too. [mou-net] Sibley in Clay Co.
There is a newly developed wetland called the "Ulen Project" a mile west of Hwy 32 on 200 AVE. N. about two miles north of Ulen MN. During the Detroit Lakes Festival of Birds an impressive list of shorebirds and waterfowl were found including Avocets, Hudsonian Godwits, Dulins and Dowitchers. Yesterday on his way to the airport, David Sibley visited the site and also found a Ruddy Turnstone and a flock of Prairie Chickens on the road next to the wetland. It appears that a pair of Avocets may be nesting there. Re: [mou-net] Worm-eating Warbler in Le Sueur County
I had one in Carleton Arb yesterday too, next to Kettle Marsh. I saw it only briefly when it popped up, and I wasn't able to get it to show again. Small greenish/brownish-backed warbler with black and buff striped head. It didn't sing. Since I wasn't able to get it to reappear, I didn't post it. [mou-net] Connecticut Warbler among 21 warbler species, Ramsey County
This morning I found 21 species of warbler at Battle Creek Park East in southeast Ramsey County. All species were heard singing and most were seen as well, highlighted by a Connecticut Warbler. To find this bird, follow the main paved trail south from the dog park area off Upper Afton Rd. and continue south until the path is flooded; the bird was singing emphatically on the dirt trail that heads east from this spot.
